In the Vistance, another Vista delay?

customer adventures, finance — by TDavid @ 5:39 pm PST

Earlier today I read about this and on the radio on the way to lunch it was repeated that analyst research firm Gartner Group thinks Windows Vista will be delayed again, not reaching consumers until March to June.

Microsoft disputes that there will be any more delays, via Computerworld:

“We remain on track to deliver Windows Vista Beta 2 in the second quarter and to deliver the final product to volume license customers in November 2006 and to other businesses and consumers in January 2007,” said Sarah Williams, a Microsoft spokesperson. Even if Microsoft meets its goal for beta 2, Gartner pointed out that that would only leave five months before Vista’s scheduled release to large business customers.

What will another Vista delay mean?
I think at this point whether it is in Q1 2007 or Q2 2007 isn’t nearly as important as was being shipped in the critical Q4 2006. People have already complained, myself included, about Microsoft shipping delays so this would be another chance for people to pile on, but financially I’m thinking it would be worse that Vista shipped with more bugs on time (er I mean late by one quarter) vs. a more solid release with fewer bugs a quarter later.

If Gartner’s prediction turns out to be accurate, what do think will the impact be on Microsoft? Will Bill Gates lose another $3 billion over the weekend when/if this would be officially announced?

Scoble says he is staying out of it because he can’t accurately predict ship cycles, but that he’s using Vista and has no reason to “doubt Microsoft’s spokespeople on this one.”

I just want them to get Vista out there so we can all be certain what the system requirements will be. Pretty please. Sugar on top.

  1. If true, no doubt it will spell trouble of some sort for Microsoft. I agree with you, though, that putting a buggy version out for release would be far worse than taking a delay, whatever the impact to their finances and reputation for timeliness (they have plenty of the former — do they still have any of the latter anyway?)

  2. IF you can run Windows XP today on a machine, you will be able to run Vista also.
Maybe not with all the “big” bang and stuff but it is already pretty fast for a early beta with everything turned on and i have a older machine.
