My wife and I have often wondered who played the really high limit slots. You see these machines roped off in plush areas and they are rarely filled with people. The most expensive slot machine we have ever played is a $50 slot. And I think that was only for a couple pulls and we were out of there. If memory serves it was a push.

PGA golfer John Daly apparently likes to play slots at a much higher level and wrote about it in the last chapter of his autobiography:

[Daly] told one story of earning $750,000 when he lost in a playoff to Tiger Woods last fall in San Francisco at a World Golf Championship. Instead of going home, he drove to Las Vegas and says he lost $1.65 million in five hours playing mostly $5,000 slot machines.

Ouch.

Daly’s new plan is to start with the $25 slots and set a limit for when it’s time to leave. Maybe he should come back down even further than that and play the $5. They still consider those machines high limit in most casinos. Better yet, his picture should be recognized in every casino on the strip and they should not let him play any more. Since he admits he has a problem maybe that should invalidate his playing privileges?

Of course this is a ridiculous notion. Casinos love to see whales like Daly waltz in. I’m sure everything he does there is paid for except the high stakes wagering. I’m surprised he actually needed to drive from San Francisco to Vegas. I bet some casino would have sent a plane to pick him up if he wanted.
