Any Sudoku fans in the house? |
Over the last year there has been an explosion in the interest surrounding the game Sudoku. In some camps it has almost reached crossword-like cult status.

The object of the game is to fill in the empty squares with the numbers 1-9 with no repeats horizontally and vertically on a 9×9 grid. You’ll find Sudoku in books, widgets, Flash plugins and much, much more, but surprisingly not in the Xbox Live Arcade.
I haven’t played even one game of Sudoku (should it be capitalized?) although you can try playing in three different skill levels here (pictured above): easy, medium or hard.
How many readers have ever played Sudoku? Am I missing the next coming of the hidden searchwords or crossword puzzle or what?
Did this post make you go hmm?

I have it on my phone. I’d never waste time playing it online, but while waiting in airports or whatnot it’s a nice distraction. Personally I’m waiting for social sudoku, where you and friends solve problems. Or Mega Sudoku, where it’s like 100 x 100

I went ahead and took like five minutes to play the game pictured above. Took me like 5 minutes to complete it on the default setting (easy, I think, didn’t look). It’s ok, but not sure if it measures up to the hype.
I like your idea, Jeremy, don’t you think that would be a cool Xbox Live game? If only they opened that up to smaller developers we’d see stuff like this in the Xbox Live Arcade. Microsoft is has a huge opportunity with their Xbox Live marketplace.

Agreed, re: Xbox Live Arcade. In fact, about once a week I get a new idea to do a game. With today’s dev tools, game development has become incredibly cheap (Torque is only like 1K/developer and includes just about everything necessary for an Arcade-quality game). Too bad I’m more of a project manager / design lead than a developer these days…

My wife is hooked, and has been for a while. I started playing a couple of days ago when I found it as a Google homepage module, and it’s very addicting. It seems so simple - the easy ones are - but then you start moving up, and the challenge of figuring it out is what keeps it entertaining.
I probably won’t continue playing it online, but I will find one for the Pocket PC, and, like Jeremy, it’ll be a good distraction when traveling (or being dragged from store to store with the wife).

Here you go Joel: sudoku for Pocket PC (free via Handango)
And for others: Google Sudoku modules results

I have SudoPocket for my PocketPC. Have books of it. It’s a great math puzzle game and can be pretty hard. I know it took off in Japan, and now it’s pretty rampant here. I love it, but I’m a lot better with relational number games than crosswords.
