Philips anti-commercial skipping patent |
Philips suggests adding flags to commercial breaks to stop a viewer from changing channels until the adverts are over. The flags could also be recognised by digital video recorders, which would then disable the fast forward control while the ads are playing.Philips’ patent acknowledges that this may be “greatly resented by viewers” who could initially think their equipment has gone wrong.
I don’t even know where to start with this one other than to say what started this post again: idiotic. Completely. I will remember this patent the next time I have a choice to buy a product that has the Philips name on it.
What type of business — that hopes to stay in business — incorporates anything that will be “greatly resented” by their customers?

I hear Philips is run more by the technical department than by the marketing one. This shows. The boys there need to cut back on the dope.

What a bunch of fuckers, from now on every time I see a product in a tv commercial I am going to put it on a list and NEVER buy it, we should all do the same, then maybe the fuckers understand.

That’s actually a good news. If they can finaly flag the start and end of commercials, I’m sure some modified DVRs could find a way to not record them.
