How to keep stride with typo squatters |
If someone ever were to make an explicit version of makeyougohmm the mistyped domain nakeyougohmm.com sounds ok good to me, but nakedyougohmm sounds better. So good in fact that I just registered it this morning. Does this make me a typo squatter since I have no current plans of making this a reality? Never say never though.

How did I come up with this domain? Using the Microsoft Research Labs tool called Strider Typo-Patrol Project:
In the Strider Typo-Patrol project, we develop an automated scanning system for discovering and analyzing typo-squatting domains. We show that a large number of such domains are parked with domain parking services to take advantage of their effective contextual-ads infrastructures. We also show that, by analyzing the ads-fetching traffic sent from typo domains to parking services, we are able to identify major typo-squatters and domain parking services that are heavily involved in large-scale, systematic typo-squatting, as well as those that are serving adult ads harmful to minors on typos of children’s web sites.
Typo squatters can make a big business out of buying up domain typos and then putting on a domain parking service complete with contextual ads. Microsoft has some handy tools and Strider is another good one. Here is a complete list of Microsoft Research downloads.
BTW, another thought just skittered across my brain while typing this for possible use of nakedyougohmm.com: a good place for those outtakes and unpublished posts I’ve wondered about what to do with before. So the ‘naked’ could be the raw, unpublishable too. Naked doesn’t have to mean only flesh of course. Hmm readers, what do you think about this?
And to webmaster readers: did you try running this software on your domain(s)? Microsoft Research recommends installing this is on a non-production machine.

Well, I expect any domain beginning with ‘naked’ will draw plenty of traffic. Especially with some hmming involved.
I did run Strider on my domains, and didn’t come up with anything half so ingenious. Maybe I should pop another fish oil.

[…] Coming from somebody who has been around the web block awhile, I find it extremely hard to believe that somebody would mistype ’sachs’ as ’sex.’ Somebody should send the folks at Goldman Sachs this archived Hmm post: How to keep stride with typo squatters. […]
