Will the Simpsons movie in 2007 sink Titanic box office record?

A lot of movies have tried, but none have taken down the behemoth that is Titanic with a staggering $1,835,400,000 in worldwide sales. The closest since then happened in 2003 and is still 700+ million away: Lord of The Rings Return of the King (still haven’t seen that one). Remember all the hype surrounding the completion of the Star Wars movies? Episode III Revenge of the Sith was #12. Episode II was actually higher on the list at #4. Only two movies have made more than a billion worldwide.

It is the longest-running prime-time entertainment series on television in the US and a worldwide hit. It is currently in its 17th season, and last month, US network Fox confirmed it had commissioned two more series.

So while the Simpsons movie is in the theaters the TV show will be running in its 19th year. It’s become a generational hit surpassing all other TV shows ever in popularity. That alone makes it a strong movie contender. To say that Matt Groening and his team are brilliant is an understatement. Groening claims that they will stop making Simpsons episodes when they run out of ideas. Considering they are nearing 20 years of TV and literally hundreds of episodes one has to wonder when that will come?

Some might argue though that going from 30 minutes to 90 minutes is going to be tricky for a show like the Simpsons. They have had some two partners like the whole Who Shot Mr. Burns episode. Probably that run 45 minutes or so.

In Titanic we knew the ship would sink and two thirds of the passengers were going to die and that didn’t stop our interest. It was also a very long movie which made it harder to run as many showings, but it lasted longer in the theater. In the Simpsons they will make fun of just about any and everything. I heard there would be swearing which might think some families will stay away but there was some nudity in Titanic and that didn’t matter.

Bold prediction
Some might think it’s ridiculous to make a comparison between an already proven film and one that still has more than a year before it hits the theater. I will be surprised if The Simpsons makes less than 750 million worldwide, and I’m going on record now, sight unseen that it will do this in the box office purely on its name and reputation. This is a film that will cross generational gaps, just as it has successfully done on TV.

Will I be wrong? What do you think The Simpsons movie will gross sight and relatively few details unseen?

  1. Despite it’s worldwide appeal on TV, a “Simpsons” movie will not approach “Titanic” and may not even hit “Ice Age: Meltdown” numbers .. but hopefully it will at least be funny

  2. It will definitely beat ICE AGE numbers and probably make the top ten in worldwide lists. In the U.K. it is still a HUGE show and pretty much anywhere outside the U.S. also.

  4. […] Yesterday, Howard Stern got an early preview of possibly the most anticipated superhero sequel of all time: Spider-man 3 and on this morning’s show Stern and crew talked about the movie. Stern is a Spider-manaholic so it’s expected he’d overly praise the film. It’s not going to gross more than Titanic. I’ve already gone on record saying that The Simpsons Movie could. The Simpsons already have owned TV, so why not the big screen? […]

  8. I’ve seen the “Simpson The Movie” and it’s not as good as it seems to, funny but yet not the best despite all the hype. Definitely not going to set a record beating the Titanic.
