Rice doesn’t trust Podshow

blogs and podcasting — by TDavid @ 11:01 am PST

Eric Rice lays the smackdown on Podshow:

Podshow is not a business I trust … As an entertainer, I can say, hey Podshow, fuck off. As a professional, I can say, I do not have confidence in this company and would advise that extreme caution be exercised in any business dealings. As a member of the community, I can say, we can do better than this. As a human, I can say, Dear god, please don’t let really good people get hurt..

Now we just have to decide if this is an entertainment drama post or he’s really concerned. This is the part about April 1st I don’t like. I’m thinking Eric is serious here, though, especially with the added f-bomb and the fact that he talked about it two other places.

Podshow is the professional podcasting enterprise that Adam Curry and company launched which pulled in some prominent podcasters. For those following along with the Yahoo Podcaster group, there have been some rocky times for this enterprise, most recently the Podshow contract was under scrutiny as allegedly being lopsided. Welcome to the entertainment business where exploitation seems to be the name of the game. Grrrr.

It should be noted that Eric Rice has sort of a competing audio-related business (he owns/operates audioblog) so his comments either carry more weight or less depending on one’s perspective. Personally I think they carry more since he is in the business and keeps a close eye on this stuff.

I don’t like using the word never, but there is less than 1%, if ever asked, that I’d ever join one of these Podshow-type operations. If that means for our podcasts we experience less popularity, less exposure, less spotlight and less money, so be it. Wouldn’t be the first thing, and surely won’t be the last thing I’d pass on because it didn’t pass my own smell test.

Seems like Eric is grounded and looks like he is cooking up some creative business ideas. I used to wonder a bit about that fiery t-shirt I always saw him in pictures wearing, but it looks like he has since shed that for a less fiery orange shirt look now. Orange-red must be one of his favorite colors. He’s done some amazing build work in Second Life.

Any podshow fans that are also readers? Or know more about Podshow (good or bad) that you’d like to share? The comments/trackback area is waiting. Even on April Fool’s day.

Did this post make you go hmm?

  1. I have been listening to the Daily Source Code since around October 2004. I have been feeling more uneasy about this whole podshow business lately. The DSC use to be about developing podcasting now it 50% about developing podshow and very little about any non-podshow podcast.

There is nothing I can point to but I still haven’t listened the Keith and The Girl reading of the podshow contract. All I can say as a listener I have been thinking about dropping my subscription to the DSC. I would not be surprised to see Curry and company selling his network in a couple of years to News Corp or Viacom.

It smells like a build and sell business to me. I am sure that Curry and the VCs will make out. It is kind of sad that this independent media is being set up to be sold out the the MSM.

  2. TDavid,

None of us should be surprised with all the PodShow developments. We have seen a steady decline of open community involvement on the part of Adam and PodShow. We have seen the great OPML podcast directory project at iPodder.org fall into decline as PodShow moved into commercial dress. PodShow is now responsible for driving economic valuation to VC investors. They needed to secure tight contracts that would be solid in any M & A opportunity. PodShow is clearly built to be an acquisition target. The $8 million invested is small money and should yield a good return. PodShow should be concerned as their value could start to be affected by all this negative talk and perceptions. Adam built his PodShow brand on all the goodwill he built by being perceived as the good guy to the little guy content creator. Giving a voice to long-tail podcasters. I believe that he is rapidly eroding this value as many podcaster insiders do not trust Adam and Podshow. I do think that PodShow and Adam can bring a lot of value to the podcast community, but they just need to be more friendly again with all podcasters and not just the most popular podcasters.

  3. Adam Curry, bastardom and copyrights: he wants everyone else to sign over their rights even when he’s not comfortable with it

Adam Curry is well on his way to being named a Bastards of the Blogs, because he’s taking a Web 2.0 business model, even when he doesn’t agree with it.   He’s already tried to rewrite history, editing his wikipedia entry making him the sole cre…
