Geico radio ad talks about blogging |
Was just listening to the Jim Rome show and heard a radio ad talking about blogging. Turns out it was a Geico insurance ad. It’s one of those ads that has nothing to do with insurance until the last few seconds where they pull back the curtain.

I’m going to poke around and see if I can find somewhere online where it’s linked/available. If any readers know where this radio ad is linked online somewhere please tell me about it in the comments/trackback.
Visited Geico.com and it turns out they have a character blog written from the POV of their Gecko. Too bad this ‘blog’ has no comments, no trackbacks, no permalinks, no RSS feed. The most current ‘blog’ post is the gecko’s take on mistyped domains and looks at first sight like a spam comment. This quite possibly is the worst example of a corporate ‘blog’ I’ve seen to date.
I wonder what my buddy Toby over at the Diva Marketing blog thinks? She was involved in a scrap over a character blog being mislabeled as ‘fake’.
It seems in the Seattle area Geico in September 2005 anyway was one of the biggest radio advertisers. I see their commercials on TV and hear them on the radio all the time.
Did this post make you go hmm?

Maybe they didnt save enough money on their insurance by switching to Geico, to pay for a real site/marketing.

Gotta admit they have a great marketing strategy, though. Who doesn’t know “I saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico?” That’s market/name association burned into the memory of every man, woman, and child in America who watches TV or listens to the radio. Word association: if I say “car insurance”, you think…?

The problem with that slogan is that not everybody actually does “save a bunch of money by switching to Geico” lol

Too true, but it brings them in the door, doesn’t it? And lots of folks will just assume that it is less, without comparing others.

Good point.

Hey TDavid - Could be fun. Seems to me that the little lizard has had several authors over the past year and the voice and content keep changing …. one of the dangers of a ‘character blog’ and one of the most difficult aspects to get right. It’s really much easier to write a ‘real person’ blog.
