Spider shoulder voyeur |
I’m working away on the computer when I turn and see this spider hanging over my shoulder.

I took about 30 picture with my camera in various modes trying to get a shot to focus and the best I could do was the two photos here. This shows how unskilled I am with digital cameras. Point, click and push, that’s me. Ok, maybe I’ll fiddle with lighting and holding the camera real steady or using a tripod, but that’s about it.

Any readers who are digital camera skilled and can tell me how I’d take a closeup shot of a spider that actually doesn’t look like crap? I’ve taken a few pictures of inantimate objects up close that haven’t turned out too bad, but clearly I need to head back to the Kodak EasyShare z760 docs for best settings for closeups.
Suggestions/tips/tricks? I’m all eyes and ears.
Did this post make you go hmm?

You are much more brave than I would be. I wouldn’t be reaching for a camera to take photos of the spider, I would be reaching in my underwear drawer for a fresh pair. I hate bugs.

Spiders are actually arachnids, with eight legs, not bugs, which have six. Whether you can take a good closueup of the spider really depends on the limitations of your digital camera. Some have good macro capabilities, others do not. Good lighting helps a lot too.

Janine, this isn’t the first time I’ve encountered a spider in my work area, check out this post: http://www.makeyougohmm.com/20040504/730/ from the Blogathon 2003.

Looks like the aggressive house spider, or hobo spider: http://www.srv.net/~dkv/hobospider/
They’re very common up here in the northwest. Unlike you in your earlier post, though, I make a daily ritual of crushing and flushing them. These things will bite you, especially in your sleep, and they can leave a pretty nasty red mark.
