Get your baseball fix in 3D at the local theater in 2007

I bet fellow Mariner’s fan Sterling will get a kick out of this one. Imagine the Mariners at your local movie theater in 3D? That’s what movie theater owners are thinking of doing in 2007.

via Reuters:

Movie theater operators hope to be screening live 3D sports events by 2007 in a bid to lure sports fans away from their home theater systems and bolster sagging mid-week ticket sales.

If the prices are right I think this idea has potential. Just imagine how this would do for the sold out games? Then again, do we really want to see 3D tobacco spit come at us? Or how about that Randy Johnson exploding bird fastball in 3D? If this should become a reality at least it shows theater owners thinking outside the box and whining about box office receipts being down.

Another thing they should do ASAP is add internet connectivity for business meetings. I’ve been to a few business meetings inside theaters and was surprised that they didn’t offer internet access. Why have a technology-related business meeting (some of these were done by Microsoft, BTW) without internet access?

I can see the logic in shutting down the internet during regular movie shows, although there might even be a future there for interactive movies. Imagine giving theatergoers UMPCs as they walked into a movie and letting them get background information on the movie as they watch it on the big screen (no sound though to avoid being a distraction except through headphones/earbuds). To avoid theft they could post ushers at the doors so that they get the devices back or tag them so they would set off alarms if they left the premises.

Whatever the movie theaters do, creative thinking is better than crying over declining box office receipts (real or imagined).

Update 7:20pm PST: Speaking of the Mariners, Jamie Moyer will be the starting pitcher for the third consectutive year. Here comes that wicked changeup …

  1. You’re right, TDavid — even I might be seen in a theater for that kind of show. One reason I prefer sitting at home to even going to the game is the view. Cinema-sized screen in 3D would lend so much more weight to telling the umpire to get some glasses. Imagine being able to see up close in 3D how Moyer paints the corner, or to watch one of Hernandez’s fastballs smoking right by you (enjoyed watching a few of those yesterday on the plasma, BTW). Maybe they could get creative with the audio and make you hear that fastball smacking the catcher’s glove just behind you (along with the ump wailing out the STRIKE).

Definitely promising. And I’m with you that the theaters need to do something creative. Right now they don’t compete with my home system on quality, availability, ambiance, beverages, extra-curricular activities, or cost.

  2. […] Seems like every other day a new free tool hits the stage to help you determine your rank in the Web Kingdom. The latest, ://URLFAN (thanks Randy Charles Morin) ranks sites based on the number of links found in thousands of RSS feeds (285,050 as of this writing). They don’t say how they picked which feeds to count. Perhaps they’re scanning all they can find. This domain (chipstips.com) isn’t ranked yet, although they did detect one link (thank you TDavid).
