Vista for consumers delayed to January 2007 |
Steve Jobs joked around at the launch of Mac OS X Tiger that Vista launch would be December 31, 2006 and it turns out he might not be that far off. Jim Allchin in his last year before leaving the company explains the delay into January 2007 for consumers: explaining the official launch plans:
“Product quality and a great out-of-box experience have been two of our key drivers for Windows Vista, and we are on track to deliver on both,” said Jim Allchin, co-president for the Platforms & Services Division at Microsoft. “But the industry requires greater lead time to deliver Windows Vista on new PCs during holiday. We must optimize for the industry, so we’ve decided to separate business and consumer availability.”
The business version of Vista is still on schedule to be released in November 2006. My guess is this will be launching the week before Black Friday, just like the Xbox 360 did. There is speculation that this delay could play into Apple’s hands, but I think consumers would rather have a more secure Windows OS (Is that an oxymoron?) than see it released a couple months sooner. Since they are already planning the next version of Office as 2007, it really can’t be considered “late” showing up in January. The news caused a bit of a negativity to swirl around the stock, however.
Did this post make you go hmm?

Considering the number of security patches that always immediately follow a release of Windows (and continue for years at a steady pace), please tell MS not to release it until the toothpick comes out clean. As soon as it is released, every member of my extended family and friends will immediately upgrade and fall prey to any vulnerability - and expect me to help them out for free.
