I'd tell you to visit certain places, but they might be a little bit smaller than you're used to since it took me forever to get used to NC coming from Seattle. Myrtle Beach, SC is a nice place but a bit redneck. It's fun for family though as far as a beach place. You're missing FL for at least the Disney World, MGM, etc. It's pretty much the same, as Cali, but a bit more. You could always try Sanibel island, FL. It's beautiful there and Gulf side. Retirement community, but that area around there is very peaceful relaxation. Been to 33% of the states according to this map thingie.
