Strange Windows XP Pro bootup issue |
Yesterday I was moving a machine and when I reconnected all the components I was getting a strange condition: the machine will no longer boot without the Windows XP Pro disk. Instead it goes to a black screen with a flashing cursor in the upper left corner.
Everything works great if I put the Windows XP Pro CD in the drive and boot from there. Suggestions, thoughts? I’m all over Google trying to run this one down.
Update 9:17am PST: Decided to install a dual boot OS with Ubuntu 5.10, so am currently partitioning the 250GB drive with 40GB set aside for Ubuntu. This way I can also try out the newest Ubuntu on yet another system. Last time I tried it out I had major problems with my Nvidia graphics card, but this is a different (newer) system and a brief experiment with the Live disk showed that it would run Ubuntu, but the LCD first monitor was off center and the second monitor was garbage/noise. I did find instructions for getting Ubuntu to work with Nvidia GE Force 5200 cards.
