Could you quit watching TV? |
Gizmag is labelling this LCD TV 56-inch and 3840 x 2160 pixels the world’s most advanced LCD TV set.
The new panel features resolution that is four times that of currently available products (1920 x 1080), and the highest ever achieved. The new panel consists of over 24.8 million units of transistors, with a data transmission speed of over 1.4 gigabytes per second.
8.29 million pixels, wow!
While most households continue to operate without an HDTV, we have one but no longer have an HDTV receiver. A couple months ago we went from a killer HDTV setup with Comcast down to a free DirecTV setup on one TV, as part of a class action lawsuit settlement.
We are flirting with the idea of going completely cold turkey with TV when the six months is up. I’d say the chance of that happening is about 10% at this point, but the idea is definitely on the table. We’re finding that with not having TV broadcast in every room in our house, we don’t watch it as much. Our two younger kids are playing the Xbox more, our oldest is on his PC and mom and dad are watching movies via Vongo and DVDs.
When I read that Jeremy Zawodny stopped watching TV (at first as a test for 30 days in January 2004) I thought that was eccentric for a geek, but here we are a couple years later seriously contemplating the same thing. Maybe it’s not so odd after all? How much time gets wasted watching the same old crap? Or are we just missing some really great programming?
(still haven’t watched even one minute of the Olympics)
Re-runs aren’t the reason to have TV any more with most our old favorite TV programs making it to DVD and some new and old being sold as downloads. If you’ve seen one you’ve seen most all of the reality shows. American Idol is balding and graying fast. How many different ways can Simon Cowell say a peformance sucks, Paula humanizing the contestant and Randy Jackson say “dog!”? 24 has sort of run its course of being interesting and my favorite show, Las Vegas, has been moved to the dead zone: Friday nights. Since I’m not a huge NBA fan, I’m feeling a sports drought as well.
Yeah, right now is not a good time for TV in our household. Good thing it’s free.
Could you go cold turkey with TV in your household? Quit watching TV? Are there shows that you simply couldn’t be entertained without having beamed to your living room?

Im with you though, almost all of the time that the television is on im watching a dvd, since i have blockbuster online now.

My wife would start the DT’s after three days without Oprah and Nancy Grace.

I *might* be able to go without getting to see General Hospital (I know I know, spare me). But, I’d go completely bonkers if I didn’t get to watch Shepard Smith. Forget it. I’m keeping the television right where it is.
