Looking to share an incomplete favorites blog list? Reading lists and favorite blogs being shared continues with Technorati Favorites.

Technorati Favorites doesn't allow adding all my favorites, does it get yours?

Too bad it is only blogs though and doesn’t include RSS feeds. If you try to add an RSS feed it barks back in red text. Also there is a maximum of 50 blogs. I have a reading list of nearly 400 RSS feeds (perhaps 300 of which are blogs) and I’m supposed to whittle that down to 50? Though I probably should do this, Technorati isn’t about to force my hand.

I really wanted to add tech.memeorandum and digg which their system seemed to accept but showed no updates for either — wrong, error. I then decided to add a new group blog I’m working on related to Massive Multiplayer Online (MMO) worlds and though we had two updates to that blog yesterday Technorati favorites showed the last update 3 days ago — wrong, error. Bummer.

It had not problem adding Hmm to the favorites list and showing the most recent post quickly, so clearly all blogs are not created equal in Technorati favorites. This is unfortunate because there are bound to be newer blogs out there on people’s true favorites and if they can’t add all their favorite blogs how can I assume lists I’m seeing are truly people’s favorites?

Also what if somebody doesn’t want to share all their favorites? Not me, I don’t mind, but I’m sure there are some that would like to create a list but not share their favorites publically. These people better not use Technorati Favorites because it makes every favorites list public. No private favorites lists.

Lastly, they have all the sticky add this to your blog stuff complete with large Technorati graphic and sponsored by linkbacks. I saw a few people already add this widget to their blog. Some people already have too much crap on their blog pages, but I guess they think us readers want to see more homepage clutter leaving even more distraction from the text (those who don’t provide full text RSS feed are some of the worst offenders BTW). Here’s an idea: just make a text link from your about page so the favorites or put one underneath your OPML file if you are sharing that. Speaking of the OPML file, I need to update mine, it hasn’t been refreshed since November 2005 and is badly outdated.

Technorati Favorites is a start to a potentially useful function, but it has quite a ways to go to be something at least I’d ever use. At least one other blogger I read this morning, j. botter, doesn’t see the point. How about you?

  1. […] I happened to notice it last night while I was sifting through all the stuff I had ignored while on vacation this last weekend, but appearantly it became announced news this morning.  Technorati has a new feature that they have appropriately dubbed “Favorites“.  Scoble and Boyd seem to be excited about it.  I happen to agree with TDavid at Make you Go Hmm. 2. […] Today I went to Technorati to search for something and noticed a new interface tweak - apart from the recently introduced authority filter, Technorati now offers you to search in either all blogs or your favourite blogs. To use this feature, you have to create an account with Technorati and add some blogs to your favourites. Reminds of an online newsreader, doesn’t it? Not exactly, though. It has its god points as well as drawbacks, and the range of opinions across the Blogosphere about this new feature goes from enthusiastic approval to sharp criticism. Thatedeguy posts a more detailed review of Technorati’s favourites complaining about the limits Technorati sets on people’s favourites. The number of blogs you can save is limited to 50. Meanwhile, TDavid at MakeYouGoHmm says: Too bad it is only blogs though and doesn’t include RSS feeds. […]
