Blame talent, not internet, for dramatically declining platinum and gold albums

music — by TDavid @ 11:43 am PST

Somebody has to say it: new music sucks. Where is the creativity? The originality? Where art thou next Beatles, Zeppelin, Who, Stones, Priest, Metallica, Sabbath, ___?

The stuff turned out from American Idol camp has been by and large good singers taking out the garbage. Kelly Clarkson had an OK song or two, but then they tried to market her as some type of sex symbol when she’s just not that hot (sorry). Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken, Carrie Underwood? Please. Bo Bice has been a brief bright spot in the toilet. AI aside, yeah, there have been a few good songs and fewer good artists — go ahead and vote in your favorites in the comments — but most of the music in the last 10 years has been formulaic swill.

Still, there continues to be blame for this lack of sales on illegal filesharing:

In the past five years, the number of gold and platinum albums have been cut in half. Part of this no doubt has to do with the rise of illegal file sharing, but part also has to do with the greater variety of music now accessible in digital form, and the ease of searching and discovering that music

Why is there “no doubt” that this decline in sales is related to illegal filesharing?

It’s not illegal filesharing hurting music sales, that’s the RIAA rant, it’s actually lousy content being purged at outrageous prices. $15-20 for a CD with one or two good songs (if you are lucky)? People have (rightly) voted with their wallets.

I still believe blockbusters are possible from breakout artists, new artists/bands that break the mold and just damn good music compiled on one album instead of just song by song. An album can explore so much more than one song, what happened to themes? Somebody that doesn’t try to rip off what happened yesterday and redefines what happens today and tomorrow. I think grunge might have been the last halfway decent genre/spin, and the father of that killed himself. Know what I am listening to right now? A song from the 70s. I keep on buying and exploring the music from the past, not the present.

Maybe I’m lost with the times, hopelessly stuck in a classic rock time warp, so help me out here with who has actually not sucked in the last 5-10 years? Three Doors Down have done some good stuff. I liked the song ‘Just like you’ by Three Days Grace. Who/what else? And please don’t tell me to check out Shitney Spears.

What artist/music from the last 5-10 years should I be searching for in Napster, iTMS, etc?

Did this post make you go hmm?

  1. I have to agree with you, although it makes me sound like an old fart (again). I used to listen to the latest heavy metal station all the time. Over the years, it started to drag. A few good new songs here and there, but mostly just beatin’ the drum. Now I listen to jazz most of the time, with some classical and classic rock thrown in here and there. Dare I say it, I have no idea what Korn has been up to for the last five years.

  2. my 5.3 cents: i used to agree with the “no decent new music” theory until i discovered file *sampling*. i’ve been using file sharing programs to discover new bands and new artists that don’t suck. while your mileage may vary, i’ve bought cd’s by Vanessa Carlton, Pink (her first cd), Good Charlotte, Morningwood and Fall Out Boys just because i liked what i heard from file sharing programs.

the good music is out there - you just have to know where to search. ;-)

  3. I’ve heard a few people mention Good Charlotte before. What songs are good by them, deb?

  4. I’m with you on this one. I really can’t think of any new music I’ve heard where I just *have* to get the CD. The last group that I can think of where I bought more than one CD is Matchbox 20. I don’t even know how long they’ve been around. I first got hooked on this band when I saw them in Detroit early in their career. I don’t know, was that 10 years ago? Already? I have no idea.
It seems any CD’s I purchase have just been replacements for my album collection. And even some of these are either hard to find or way out of my price range for what I’d pay for a CD. For instances, The Baby’s Head First CD, try finding that one!! Well, I did find it on ebay but the guy selling it wanted $50.00!! Hello??
I love the music from the 70’s. Even the cheezie stuff (and also the 50’s, & 60’s). My brother calls me the queen of cheese whenever I sing, ‘Billy don’t be a hero’ (nevermind). And also the hair bands in the 80s. Even the one hit wonders back then had more style than the one hit wonders now. It’s just all crap.
Shitney Spears? Are we really going to be talking about her in a blog post 30 years from now? Yawn.
