Burnett + AOL = online Gold Rush game-TV hybrid |
Here’s a neat idea, a reality TV show played by searching around AOL:
Gold Rush! will begin with 13 trucks containing solid gold, burying 13 caches of lucre around the United States, according to Mr. Burnett in an interview Tuesday. Clues regarding the whereabouts of those caches will be embedded online through the AOL web sites and other media.
Burnett is the guy behind Survivor, The Apprentice and many more reality TV shows you’ve probably seen, watched or heard about. According to the article, Yahoo is working on something similar in association with Steven Spielberg (?). NBC’s forthcoming Treasure Hunters is another competitor. I couldn’t find links to any of these shows with some quick searching, so if any readers have links to these shows official websites please use the comment/trackback section to tell me about them so I can update this post or reference in a future one.
Recently I lamented the lack of interaction between TV and the internet and how excited I was to learn of Microsoft research hyperlink video technology. Hopefully these shows will be a success and further blur the lines between the internet and television. I think it’s a great trend with lots of upside potential. Otherwise, the most interaction we will continue to receive as viewers is text message voting a la American Idol. There can be so much more interaction.
How about a choose your own adventure type story on TV? The producers could shoot alternate storylines and then viewers could watch the show (and the in show advertising, hint, hint) and choose their own path. Imagine an Amercian Idol where if the viewer desired Clay Aiken could have been the winner?
Did this post make you go hmm?
