Rumor: Google finally admits to working on Linux variant, Goobuntu?

search engines, finance — by TDavid @ 7:53 pm PST

Stock performance: GOOG misses earnings goal, 15.5% drop, confirms Google OS rumours according to The Register: GoobuntuFirst Yahoo, and now Google has failed to make it’s earnings goals, causing the much revered GOOG stock to plummet 15.5% in after hours trading. Keep your eye on GOOG stock tomorrow 2/1/06. The best of the GYM trio as far as stock repurcussions from goals vs. actual results seems to have been Microsoft thus far, though my guess would be that Google will bounce back from this news since despite missing projections, they still had very good financial results.

So what does Google do? They finally admit to their trump card, a Linux-based OS based on Ubuntu called, you guessed it, Goobuntu.

Never mind the fact that they’ve been denying this as recent as CES that they worked on this and that the source of this not so stunning revelation is The Register which depending on whom you ask may not be the most reliable source. The Goobuntu domain redirects to some Cuban portal. Tech.Memeorandum is in a Google frenzy.

No time for me to get into what everybody else is saying about whether or not Google is really doing an OS, been there done that already anyway. It was never a matter of if, just when.

Instead, I’m watching lights flicker on/off from heavy winds and reviewing Internet Explorer 7 beta 2. More on that later if the power doesn’t go out.

Update 5:19pm PST: Phillip Lenssen says that Google told him: “We use Ubuntu internally but have no plans to distribute it outside the company.” So this seems to be yet another tired bogus Google rumor. I still think Google someday will release a Google OS of some sort and most likely it will be based on the Linux OS.

  1. Did you have any thougths on the way Google alluded to new products on its conference call? The transcript is up at Internetstockblog.com; as a google investor, I’d love to hear your views on it.
