Google News outted from beta |
Before you say “it’s about time” that Google News leaves beta, I’m with you, but Google News has been the premier tool of choice for locating breaking news stories on a wide variety of topics. Maybe we must chalk up their beta work to fine wine? Only topix.net since it started adding blogs comes to mind as a distant competitor. Numerous wannabe, copycat services exist but from what I’ve seen they aren’t in the same league.
For more specialized tech news, tech.memeorandum has an impressive algorithm, but it’s pretty tightly focused and misses some important tech-related stories in favor of stuff like Thomas Hawk writing why he joined FM publishing. Hawk’s readership aside, who cares? If one adds Digg, Slashdot and a few other sources, it’s not too difficult keeping up with what’s happening in the tech sector.
But if I want to see what Ozzy Osbourne or Pete Rose have been up to lately, I head straight to Google News. The fact that Google News (finally) added RSS feeds makes the service even more valuable. Google News pointed me to this recent ESPN interview with Pete and also the news that the seemingly forever on hold GNR album Chinese Democracy may be out later this year. Won’t hold my breath on that one, Axl Rose.
These days, where do you get your aggregated news from online? Or do you skip aggregators and go directly to the sources first and read the headlines there? Anybody here still subscribe to the print newspaper? We haven’t done that in years.
Did this post make you go hmm?

I’m a big fan of Google News Alerts…….so even on a day when for some reason I don’t have time to scour the usual web sources, I get a daily summary of links on each topic delivered to ye olde email box.
Also dig the RSS live bookmarks in Firefox for keeping tabs on news as well..
I still subscribe to the print newspaper here….
Why? Now that’s another question….I’ll let ya know when I find the answer.

Our local island paper is the only print news we subscribe to anymore, and that’s mostly for the entertainment contained in the Police Blotter: “Officers were called to the scene of an altercation at a Manitou Beach retirement community. Both parties suffer from Alzheimer’s, and neither could remember what had happened.”
For other news, RSS feeds through Google sidebar. If I see a headline that catches my eye, I click it.
