Shut up that noisy PC |
CNET posted a how-to article by John Burek a year ago for reducing the noise coming out of your PC. It was spotted and promoted by Digg folks on the front page today.
Unsurprisingly most PC noise emits from the fans and this how-to article becomes more about replacing noisy parts with more expensive quieter ones.
Now before you wonder why I’d point to an article from 11 months ago. It’s to illustrate that Digg front page news isn’t always current and isn’t always that useful. What you get here is basically someone linking to an older article and Digg folks bagging on the “how-to” article. If only high quality material is promoted to the front of Digg then how did this piece get there?
(gamed?)
My favorite comment by Bullsnot: “Oh yeah and to reduce your cd rom noise, don’t use it, Great help!”

One thing I’ve noticed about the Mac compared to our PCs is the difference in noise. Some say the eMac is the noisest of the Macs too, which is odd because I can’t hear the thing unless I put my ear next to it.
How noisy is your PC? Have you ever taken the time to remove the fan with a quieter one or do you just turn up the radio louder?
Did this post make you go hmm?

High-rpm SCSI drives make all the noise in this establishment (apart from the occasional “WTF!” from yours truly). Don’t now how to quiet Mr. SCSI (apart from yelling “WTF!” louder).

I’ve taken the time to quiet my pc. I changed the power supply, heatsink and fan, and upgraded the hard drives. With my pc in the living room, I was quite happy with the results. I’m more sensitive to noise than most, and I can barely hear it when the room is still.
