Trekkies shouldn’t count out an aging James T. Kirk someday fighting those uber cheesy gorns again someday. Ok, that’s overstated, actually William Shatner, published author and accomplished actor, is starting the official William Shatner DVD club where for $47.99 a year those in the club will get sent a free DVD every month of Kirk-worthy titles:

“I’ve chosen a select group of memorable and entertaining sci-fi movies that never got the exposure they deserved and made them available to fans everywhere at a great price,” Shatner said in a statement.

Quick math tells me that $4 a DVD. I wonder how many of these DVDs will be of the Wal-Mart $1 bargain bin variety? Could be an ok deal if the movies aren’t very, very bad. If any readers sign up let us all know how this comes out and I promise to do the same if I subscribe.

  1. TDavid-
To be upfront, I work for the company that created the William Shatner DVD Club. Thanks for giving us some exposure on your site. I wanted to answer your question directly… NONE of our movies are of the bargain basement variety. To give you some hard information, here are 5 of the first movies that subscribers in our club will receive:

Immortal: MSRP $25, Amazon price $22
Ginger Snaps: MSRP $10, Amazon price $7
King of the Ants: lowest Amazon price $19 (Amazon sellers)
Black Cadillac: MSRP $25, Amazon price $22
Close Your Eyes: MSRP $15, Amazon price $9

Also, keep in mind that if you buy these discs from Amazon, you’ll have to pay shipping as well, whereas the William Shatner DVD Club ALWAYS has Free Shipping. I think we offer a great deal on some really entertaining movies. I hope you and some of your customers will sign up for a Free DVD and tell us what you think!
