On demand menstruation |
At risk of this coming off as a completely sexist post, I have to think that a contraceptive that would allow women to control menstruation would be in high demand for both women and men. Men obviously not taking the contraceptive, just taking the monthly abuse.
via Macleans.ca:
In 2006, a new oral contraceptive called Anya, developed to “put women in control of when or if they want to menstruate,” is expected to hit the Canadian and U.S. markets.
Women cannot like what periods do to them every month. I know my wife sure doesn’t seem to enjoy it. The article points out that Anya is still pending approval in Canada. I did some searching for “anya” in Google news to find its status in the US and all I saw as of this writing were Canadian publication references.
Making periods optional? Tell us more, Anya.
Did this post make you go hmm?

But I have to wonder at the medical smartness of this med!? The menstrual cycle is very important to a ladies body and should happen as the body needs it to happen. Yes, I understand that women don’t like it, but still, it’s part of their bodily functions.

As soon as I saw this title in bloglines I just knew there was going to be some mention of men and abuse
I can’t speak for all women but my initial reaction to seeing something like this contraceptive is to question what the risk factors are (both short yet, more importantly, long term) despite how safe they claim the pill to be. I agree with Don that your body needs to do what it is meant to do.
I got my demon cycle back when I was only 8 years old and dealt with it for 33 years before having a hysterectomy this past July (for uterine cancer). If you take time to read the article that TDavid links to, this next comment will make more sense—any woman who thinks they are too busy to have a montly cycle can cry me a river. I was busy too

I have to say that this is something that definitely shouldn’t be messed with, let nature take its course. Many years ago a doctor told me that the monthly cycle was good for a womens body as it gets rid of unwanted/unneeded toxins. It appears that the longterm effects of this are unknown and that seems very scary to me.

Paul - as written in my post, I did some searching for “Anya” and didn’t find any sources to cite. Feel free to share here if you have better luck running one down.
