Answering the 10 conflict of interest questions |
Hsien-Hsien Lei posts a list of 10 questions posed by The National Center of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the U.S National Institutes of Health. My answers follow each of the 10 questions and relate specifically to this blog.
1. Who runs this site?
This site is owned and operated by KMR Enterprises and published by me, TDavid. We own dozens of websites, most of which are programming/technology-related. My most frequently updated bio is available here. Rather than have a different bio on every website, I usually just link to that.
2. Who pays for the site?
Same as #1.
3. What is the purpose of the site?
A blog about many things that I come across, sort of a virtual scrapbook of musings, ideas, thoughts, reviews on a wide variety of topics. It might be a cool link to something, a review of a product, service, book, music, movie or something else. Maybe it’s a picture of something or a free program. It might be an idea on blogging. It’s a lot of different things but tends to focus more on technology-oriented subjects with an emphasis on thinking, hence the title: Things That … Make You Go Hmm.
Readers can subscribe to any category or any search keyword so that they can read the content that they are specifically interested in or they can subscribe to the entire site RSS and get daily updates. From July 4, 2003 until Dec 15, 2005 there have been 686,304 words in 2,717 posts with an average of 252 words per post. The most words used in a post: 3,009 on May 19, 2005 [makeyougohmm.com/20050519/1883/]. That should give an idea of the size/scope of the content.
4. Where does the information come from?
RSS feeds, TV, radio, podcasts, friends telling me about stuff online and offline. The information can come from anywhere, although in the case of rumors or news we do try and check a few different sources or label clearly as a “rumour.”
5. What is the basis of the information?
I hate questions like this. What’s the meaning of life?
6. How is the information selected?
If it makes me go hmm, I think maybe it will make you go hmm.
7. How current is the information?
Most information posted is current and topical. I’d say 90% of the content posted involves something new happening online or offline.
8. How does the site choose links to other sites?
In the editorial area, we link to whatever we are talking about primarily and attribute quotes or passages. Perhaps 1 in 100 posts will have affiliate links which are clearly marked as (affiliate) after the link. Outside the editorial, we display sponsor banners and links to sites that we enjoy. We also use contextual text ads inside most individual post pages. RSS feeds are full text.
9. What information about you does the site collect, and why?
As of this writing, this site does not use any cookies except for remembering those who optionally choose to register. Email and IP address are collected but not redisplayed to the public. No other information is collected and anonymous commenting is allowed (but discouraged).
10. How does the site manage interactions with visitors?
First time comments are moderated to block out spam. Because rel=’nofollow’ is not used, some comments may be edited/refused if they contain spam (if the link is in the sig tag and repeated in the body). Also, comments which are completely off-topic and not relevant to the current post may be declined/removed. It is rare, but we might respond privately via email to some commenters. One-way trackbacks are discouraged and usually rejected, please do not send one-way trackbacks unless your post is extraordinarily useful and on topic.
Ok, for fellow blogger readers, how do you answer these 10 conflict of interest questions? Copy / paste the questions below to your blog, answer them, and feel free to trackback in with your answers.

Your answer to #6 cracked me up. Since you’re not exactly a health blog, I’m not sure whether you belong in the honor roll or not. But I’ll add you anyway for your effort.
Thanks for playing!
