‘podcast’ selected as word of the year |
First it was ‘blog’ being selected as the word of the year and now blogging’s audio-based brother: ‘podcast’ is getting the nod.
Podcast, defined as “a digital recording of a radio broadcast or similar program, made available on the Internet for downloading to a personal audio player,” will be added to the next online update of the New Oxford American Dictionary, due in early 2006.
Dave Winer calls this a Forest Gump moment. Adam Curry has been quiet on this announcement so far, but I’m sure he’ll be pleased as well. tech.memeorandum has commentary by others.
Citizen publishing and content creation is hitting on all cylinders at the moment but I can’t help wondering what this does to the professional publishing industry? Can the two co-exist for an extended period of time?
I’m not being critical of this current success, no way, I think it’s great, I’m just wondering. There’s 24 hours in the day, 168 hours in a week, and my biggest concern with audio and video and to a lesser extent blogs, is the amount of time it takes to view them. The same is true for music, although there is a big replay factor there, movies and TV.

We need some way to compress and stream into our consciousness. Just like now for audio conversion from a CD to an MP3 is much shorter than having to play and record the song in real time we need to download the data to our brains. Can digital link implants ala Matrix and Andromeda be far behind?
