Driving a truck through Internet Explorer to Google Desktop |
By now with the accumulation of flaws discovered opening up holes the size of craters on Mars you’d think nobody on earth — including me — would continue using Internet Explorer. But darn it, some websites don’t work without IE (and it’s not necessarily always the webmaster’s fault), so what is today’s netizen to do? Stop visiting?
Heck, why not throw another log on the fire (some days it sure feels that way):
“This design flaw in IE allows an attacker to retrieve private user data or execute operations on the user’s behalf on remote domains,” Gillon wrote in his description of the attack method. He crafted a Web page that–when viewed in IE on a computer with Google Desktop installed–uses the search tool and returns results for the query “password.”
The article says Microsoft is monitoring the situation carefully. Luckily, I uninstalled Google Desktop quite some time ago. There was something about that program running in the background all the time that I wasn’t comfortable about. Yeah, you could jail it to only monitoring certain directories, but still … I don’t know.
As for IE? Is this really Microsoft’s fault? Popular opinion is yes, it’s their fault, blame it on the Death Star, but I’m not putting the blame solely at their doormat because Firefox has had problems too. Fill in the blank, so have others. Browsers seem to be the #1 source these days of intruder alert. Maybe it’s time to put all the browsers in the recycle bin trash can and adopt something different/new and less hacker proof. Boy, what an undertaking that would be!
Perhaps this is a place — an opportunity — where an up and coming company could dampen some of that Google thunder?
Did this post make you go hmm?

All browsers definitely have their own faults. Click on the CNET icon and read the article, it pretty much sums up the exploit.
