TiVo not completely to go yet, but soon will be with iPod and PSP

television, movies, finance — by TDavid @ 11:46 am PST

It seems like almost everything is ‘coming in 2006′ these days. Well, add TiVo to the long list as it appears they aren’t done sucking on exhaust yet, and may announce today that their users will be able to transfer TiVo’d shows to their iPod and PSP. For a small (one time?) fee, of course. TiVo to Transfer Shows ti iPods, Sony PSP

[TiVo] … allows its users to transfer programs to personal computers and DVD’s, as well as to portable video players that support Microsoft’s mobile video format. When the company releases new software in the first quarter of next year, it will extend that capability to the video iPod, released last month, and the Sony PSP.

PSP owners can already watch PVR’d shows on the PSP with the $350 LocationFree player which is similar to a Slingbox, only on steroids: with three devices that can connect instead of only one like the Slingbox.

Neither the Slingbox or the LocationFree are as mainstream as TiVo yet though and it sounds like TiVo is going to make this a small software unlock price (the article states $15-$30). Those who already have TiVo and don’t have the extra $250-350 to get one of those other devices will be interested in TiVo all over again.

The TiVo service isn’t complete dead, but this news, coupled with their deal to give away a 40 hour Series2 box if you’ll just sign a one year $16.95/month contract, might just give them a stay of execution. I still think somebody will buy TiVo. Google? Microsoft? Yahoo has already buddied up, so they might be out of the picture. The time is right. In six months, if this works out for TiVo they might see a resurgence and then the buyout price will be a lot more.

  1. […] My old lil buddy TiVo, whom I still believe is destined to be gobbled up by a bigger fish for its technology, just won a major legal victory against Echostar along with $73 million. Furthermore, the’ve cut some nice deals for the future lately. Separately, TiVo announced Wednesday that it has extended an agreement with its largest partner, satellite TV provider DirecTV Group Inc., for three more years. The $87 million request was based on a financial consultant’s estimate of how much TiVo would have earned if EchoStar had not sold more than 4 million of its own recorders using TiVo technology. […]
