I used to use my desktop like it was a junk drawer, and threw everything I didn't have a place for onto it. But when I got a new laptop this year I decided to reform... The first thing I did was remove everything but the things I've grown to associate with the desktop - My Computer, Recycle Bin, IE, Firefox, and the like. Then I reorginazed the start menu programs folder and put everything into folders. My start menu programs folder now has 6 sub-folders: Apps, Browsers, Games, Microsoft, Startup, and Tools. I then created a "Closet" folder on the root where I throw temp files, and everything I clean up from places like the start menu. The last thing I did was download was WinTidy which gives me nice small desktop icons.

I don't have any programs that clean my desktop for me. I have a rule of thumb. If you don't use it constantly, put it away. I've got an "Unused Icons" folder on my desktop. If I do't CONSTANTLY use something, as in every day, it goes in there. My desktop isn't cluttered, but the shortcut I need is still a second or three away.
