Dealing with Windows desktop clutter

customer adventures — by TDavid @ 4:57 pm PST

This post is a work in progress, but I’m posting at the current stage to get any help/assistance from readers with good ideas. It will likely continue to be updated as time goes on.

This morning I created a folder labeled ‘desktop clutter’ and have thrown in all the shortcuts on my desktop … I was running out of space! Decided to Google “eliminate windows desktop clutter” and see if there were any programs that would help organize the desktop. I know Windows has a built-in shortcuts that haven’t been used in awhile function.

Uninstalled
eMusic Downloader - not subscribed to eMusic any more
FilmLoop - it loaded at Windows startup as part of the installation (bad) and not using
Prison Tycoon - not playing
WebEx Meeting Manager - not using, reboot required

What programs, methods, ideas, etc do you use to keep your Windows desktop free of clutter?

Did this post make you go hmm?

  1. I don’t have any programs that clean my desktop for me. I have a rule of thumb. If you don’t use it constantly, put it away. I’ve got an “Unused Icons” folder on my desktop. If I do’t CONSTANTLY use something, as in every day, it goes in there. My desktop isn’t cluttered, but the shortcut I need is still a second or three away.

  2. I used to use my desktop like it was a junk drawer, and threw everything I didn’t have a place for onto it. But when I got a new laptop this year I decided to reform… The first thing I did was remove everything but the things I’ve grown to associate with the desktop - My Computer, Recycle Bin, IE, Firefox, and the like. Then I reorginazed the start menu programs folder and put everything into folders. My start menu programs folder now has 6 sub-folders: Apps, Browsers, Games, Microsoft, Startup, and Tools. I then created a “Closet” folder on the root where I throw temp files, and everything I clean up from places like the start menu. The last thing I did was download was WinTidy which gives me nice small desktop icons.
