Xbox 360 video at Channel 9 no games, but sheds some light on service and hardware

gaming — by TDavid @ 8:53 am PST

Yesterday Channel 9 posted a short Xbox 360 video walkthru with Larry Hryb aka Major Nelson and a group of MVPs. The video doesn’t show any games but does offer a few nuggets on accessories and share a few of the Xbox 360 Live screens. Using their Channel 9 Clipster feature (sorry, only works in Internet Explorer at this time, I know that blows) I snipped out three clips I found interesting:

VIDEO: Control power via wireless controller 00:14 - Turn on/off Xbox 360 by pushing a button on the wireless controller.
VIDEO: conveniently detachable 20GB hard drive 00:33 - Looks like a one second operation to detach the hard drive and take on the road
VIDEO: wireless controller battery life / charging 00:35 - Larry said that he believes the charge time is 35-40 hours and also shows how the Xbox 360 wireless controller can easily be recharged while playing.

Another Niner (slang for Channel 9 member), Cybermagellan transcribed the video here. The MVPs weren’t able to do much except for rah-rah in the video, unfortunately. The MVPs do get more involved and active in the second Channel 9 Xbox 360 video with discussion on how the forums in Xbox 360 Live will work. Still no games shown in that one either though.

Just under a month to go until the launch day hunt begins. No, I’m not preordering the Xbox 360. Preording is most certainly wiser, especially this time of the year, but part of the fun of launch days are going out to the stores and seeing what the demand is really like. Talking to other launch day gamers, store employees, surveying the actual retail landscape. It’s clearly a thrillseeker thing. Some might think of this as retail hell, but I actually enjoy these launch day excursions. Long time readers will remember I hesitated doing this with the Sony PSP launch, but ultimately couldn’t resist. I’m sure when the PS3 and Revolution launch days come in 2006, good health willing, I’ll be there.

Will I even be able to buy the Xbox 360 on launch day? Guess we’ll both have to tune in to find out. I was shut down when the PS2 was launched. I went to many different local stores and never was able to find one in stock. I waved $500 in cash in front of one new PS2 owner and he scoffed at the offer. I will be bringing more cash with me on November 22, just in case.

I’m starting to get that launch day fever!
