Google explains what their Base is about |
Google continues to use their blog to get the word out. It’s really too bad it’s setup as a one-way medium (no comments, no trackbacks), but hey at least we get an explanation of what they are planning to do with Google Base courtesy of Tom Oliveri, Product Marketing Manager:
Here’s what’s really going on. We are testing a new way for content owners to submit their content to Google, which we hope will complement existing methods such as our web crawl and Google Sitemaps.
Yesterday, when this Google Base stuff was erupting I held my cards: “Unfortunately there isn’t enough for me to look at to describe or pontificate further. It’s definitely bookmarked, though.”
It’s fun sometimes to speculate what a company might be up to with a new product/service, but I think the whole jump to condemn something as evil (the Google cliche) without enough substance or background is much too easy to do.
I noticed some other blogger flak yesterday over the Google Accelerator making a very brief reappearance. Until it’s really, really made available for download again, I’m not going to re-review that one. After actually using it and seeing the pros and cons, I ultimately uninstalled the first time around.
I’ve had to alter some of my own review principles over time because I used to only like to review final products/services but everything is in beta these days and seems to stay that way for too long. By the time I would write a review everybody and their brother has already said everything worth saying, so I can’t really wait for final releases and don’t. Making reviews of developer previews and betas doesn’t seem that fair to the developers to me, but in this day and age if it’s made public, it’s fair game for scrutiny. I’m keeping this in mind with my own products and services because I realize the blades cut both ways.
Isn’t it cool how the web keeps changing? Nobody can stand still and stay in the game for too long.
Did this post make you go hmm?
