MusicGiants online service offers CD-quality tracks starting at $1.29 per song

I’m out of the coding mines (briefly) for lunch and wanted to comment on something new I just saw.

MusicGiants for the high end audiophiles to download lossless files encoded up to 1100 kbps

Here’s another service, just launching today, called MusicGiants which didn’t do a me-too offering and instead focuses on offering lossless files with quality of up to 1100 kbps. This legal music download service will offer the quality of CDs starting at$1.29 per song and include DRM. Requires $50 annual subscription fee which is credited back the first year in $50 music credit. The annual fee is waived for those who purchase $250 or more worth of music.

I really like the idea behind this site. One thing that all of the online music stores share, including iTunes, is a lack of superior quality with MP3 files encoded at 128kbps in most cases. 128kbps just doesn’t measure up to a CD, especially if played on any kind of decent speakers. Most computer speakers are crap. Finally a legal online download service aimed at high end music lovers!

The one thing that makes me apprehensive about the MusicGiants pitch is the “starting at” price tag. I wondered how much some of these tracks would cost because if the price of single songs got too expensive then why wouldn’t someone just go buy the non-DRM’d CD and just burn the songs themselves?

Anybody check this out yet and know the answer to this one? Added to my review to-do list.

  1. I have been using Music Giants for a month now. It was a rough start, as some songs listed on the site were not actually ready for download. Next, I needed to understand how the client software REALLY worked etc. Now, a month later, things are going smoothly. Pick the songs, download, make a CD. Very Easy. More and more music is on line. I like knowing I am getting the full music, then I can choose how high a bit rate to use on my Mp3 player.
