Networks' obligations also extend to the readers don't you think? Should they for example provide at least some sort of editorial oversight? Do the readers expect network blogs to at least have gone through the hands of a proofreader perhaps? So maybe the network gets what they're paying for; some of the blogs in one memorable network are so badly presented it's really kind of sad.

[...] My feelings on blog networks being writer sweatshops hasn’t changed. There isn’t a single network out there that doesn’t have more dogs than jewels.
[...] Before anybody flames us for not paying, please understand that we are not fishing for more content here, this blog does just fine the way it currently operates. Ad income and subscribers have been increasing almost every month. Actually, we want to have a way for interested readers and/or other bloggers to be able to submit content here if they want to do so, nothing more, nothing less. If you think this deal which basically boils down to exposure only sucks, then please do not submit. There is no secret, sinister agenda to rape writers and if you doubt I’m passionate about writers not being abused then read this. [...]

[...] The more knowledge and awareness of online collaboration tools as a good, old-fashioned shit disturbing methodology, the better. Problem is, like everything else, all kinds of blogging for money opportunities are popping up. If you can make ad revenue from your own blog, then more power to you. However, more and more, as per this example blogging networks that are popping up want gobs of frequent posting for crappy revenue splits. It really makes me wonder if, or for how long, those projects will have any kind of worthwhile content. [...]

[...] Didn’t I just write a couple weeks ago that the primary people in blog networks who make money are the network owners? Time to applaud Jason Calacanis and Brian Alvey, congratulations guys! And that’s meant earnestly. They did their job as business owners. From a business owner perspective, I’m impressed and wish them the best. [...]

I think the other thing here, with something like b5media and the volume of blogging they want authors to do, is that the content is bound to be quickly written and of poor quality. Maybe not at first, but after a certain period of time.
