Google blog search screenshot and test search results

blogs and podcasting, search engines — by TDavid @ 2:32 am PST

Google Blog search results screenshot

Just as I was about to logoff, I saw that Google Blog Search was live and had to take it for a few test searches. Shown above is a search for “tdavid” which yielded 629 results and those primarily seem to come from Hmm. I noticed they linked my rather outdated and rarely updated Software, Scripting & Website Travels as a related blog (yech, I won’t even link that sucky blog). A better one for them to have put as related would be my newer php-scripts blog. I’ll have to write something about Google on that blog tomorrow and maybe with any luck Google’s blog bot will stop on by.

A search for pdc05 generated 938 results. Scoble nets 7,215 results, I’m sure that will make him smile when he emerges from the cloud of PDC dust. 7,929 results for Winer.

eBay returned 599,354, while Skype returned a paltry (by comparison) 61,579 results.

Microsoft had less results than eBay with 594,240. Google was the champion in results returned with 2,173,179. Everybody talks about Google!

Actually, this is probably more a result of them having a secondary blog search specifically for blogger users at search.blogger.com

Also, I saw some more people talking about the launch earlier like Niall Kennedy:

It’s important to note that from what I have read on Search Engine Watch and others Google is specifically restricting its search to feeds, and not using the HTML of the blog. Why? Googlebot is designed to swallow a page whole and not break the page up into individual entries or items. Feeds come prepackaged as individual items or entries allowing for easy digestion by parsers and indexers.

GoogleRumours notes: “Results are shown very quickly, which is typical for Google but is something that other blog search engines have had trouble with.”

Om Malik writes:

This is a move that preempts Yahoo’s pending launch of RSS Search, which is supposed to come sometime before the end of the month. This I am pretty sure will turn the heat up on the likes of Icerocket.

I like IceRocket, so hopefully competition breeds excellence in their case. I’m not so sure how Technorati will fare in the long run … though so far, it looks like Google Blog search is launching with bare bones features, no tagging or other bells and whistles. Typical Google vanilla launch, but one that focuses on a super relevant search. They’ve won playing by these rules for the last few years, so why mess with success. I’ll be curious to see what their stock does tomorrow.

Speaking of tomorrow, I suspect this news will overshadow at least some of the PDC excitement. It’s game on and the web never sleeps!

Sleep, ah yes, that is something I really am going to do now. I’ll see what others say on the other side of the sandman.
