PDC05: Vista performance improvements

customer adventures, travel — by TDavid @ 12:33 pm PST

Jim Allchin’s presentation on the stage at the PDC 2005 is about Windows Vista changes. One of which is that Windows will defrag itself. It will analyze what programs are launched and used and get smarter about optimizing load times and boot times. He also talks about performance and rebooting times in more depth showing something they are calling Superfetch.

without Vista's new superfetching technology

With the superfetch option it shows speed increase of a third (just over 10 seconds). Also, very cool is being able to plug in a USB memory stick and gain extra memory from that device. Allchin says it will work with “any” USB memory stick. This is a very slick feature! The information is encrypted so if you pull out the device it’s not going to be easily accessible to unauthorized parties.

He cites in that post a couple of attendees saying “the hype created … is totally worth it” and “amazing first day” so perhaps the rest of us that aren’t there need more time to see stuff coming out of there.
