Is Google saying people are giving me the middle finger?

blogs and podcasting, search engines — by TDavid @ 11:58 am PST

I know Google loves me, but they still have my name wrong!

Ok, Google you know you’re aces in my book, but how many search results do I need before you get my name right? It’s not “David” … the “T” actually does matter, it is TDavid (capital T, capital D). Please stop asking folks who type my name — and others who share this name — into your search engine with accusing red text “Did you mean: david.”

No, we didn’t accidentally add a T and really mean one of the most popular (#13 on this list) names in the world (656 billion results in Google for David). It’s far and away not accidental that my name is TDavid.

Maybe the recent adding of Matt Cutts to my blogroll can get this (it’s honestly a humorous and friendly attempt) to the right department? Googleguy, are you listening? Didn’t your virtual mother teach you that getting somebody’s name wrong is impolite?

Google no longer thinks podcasting means broadcasting, so they do eventually catch onto this type stuff. And no, for the people who are taking this entry all too seriously, I’m not suggesting my name is on the same level or even remotely close to the term podcasting. That’s a hot term right now. Although I remember just six months or so ago when a Google podcasting search would turn only a couple hundred thousand results. And a year ago it was way under 100k. It’s barely a year old, in fact.

Scoble must have given the Redmond crew the hint, because MSN has my name right but a mere 17,250 results. Yahoo? Yup, and 128,000 results from them, so they are showing me love too — thank you!

Google you are in company with my buddies over at Ask Jeeves?. 28,100 results and still the spelling suggestion: “david” — they don’t even capitalize the name?

Let’s look at the misspelling possibility for a moment, as if somebody was really going to “misspell” david with a “t”? I’d love to hear somebody actually say they think there is a “t” in David.

So what about mistyping it?

If someone is mistyping let’s look at where the “t” is located on the keyboard in relation to the “d” — it’s struck with the left middle finger in the QWERTY keyboard layout typing whereas the “t” is struck with the left index finger. So are Google — and other search engines making this same mistake — saying people are giving me the middle finger?

Hmm.

However, I’ve read, commented and linked to Randy’s blog and he didn’t find out enough about me to even get my name right. But he’s in good company, Google still thinks it’s “david” too. […]
