iPod nano = nah, no thanks |

The Apple faithful is all over the news of a new iPod called the iPod Nano. It is flash-based with color display and thin as a pencil. It comes in 2 GB ($199 USD, 500 songs) and 4 GB ($249 USD, 1,000 songs) sizes.
At the risk of raising the ire of some folks (sorry), I must admit that I’m not all that impressed or excited. Sure, it’s a sexy looking device, Apple makes elegant, meticulously designed hardware. Their Apple stores are immaculate and fun to shop at, but reality check: the Nano is overpriced like most Apple hardware. I’m not saying this to bash on Apple because I actually like Apple hardware, but this nano just has early adopter rape written all over it to me. I’m fully expecting something much better and less spendy to be along — from Apple — within the next 12 months.
I write this realizing that’s the breaks of staying on the technology bleeding edge — and in some cases I’m totally ok with that (videogame systems and some hardware) but it just seems like with Apple stuff the pricing is even more volatile. Take for instance the 60GB color iPod … weren’t those selling for $599 less than 12 months ago? Yeah, they were, and it prompted me to return my recently purchased 40 GB non-color iPod. What do those $599 60GB color iPod’s cost now? $399! So 200 bones is the price for … impatience? Still even $399 for a color screen and no video or WiFi? It seems like iPod history says: hang tight on the iPods for a better deal. There will be something cheaper and better in less than 12 months and this whole cycle will begin anew. Maybe something with WiFi and video. Now when Apple gets that device and makes it pencil thin and prices it under $500? Then I’ll be doing the happy dance all the way to the nearest authorized Apple dealer.
The flipside is who wouldn’t like to do at least the touchy-feely on the Nano? It’s such a sleek-looking device! So, for those who do buy one, why are you buying? What’s the use? The gym? Running on the treadmill/jogging?
(seeing future with me at the local Megastore feverishly checking out the store display model)

[…] Saw the Metallica on iTunes news announced several places yesterday (first here, thanks Gerald) and planned to check when I had a few minutes on the only place I have iTunes installed: my Mac. I don’t have an iPod and am not really that interested in buying one, although I did buy one once upon a time and returned it and paid the restocking fee. Why? I didn’t and still don’t travel enough places where a portable music player could/would be used that much. […]
