Nintendogs don’t grow old, die or poop?

Ok, I’ve played Nintendogs enough to see the point. Er, I mean the lack of one. Other games like The Sims at least appeal to one’s sense of almost complete control, but control is limited in Nintendogs. Your dog can’t grow old, can’t die and doesn’t even appear to me to take a crap. When you take the dog for a walk he pisses on the street (which quickly evaporates) , but no giant-sized mound of steaming poop? What kind of dog is that?

Is there a doggy dump unlock mode or what?

This game is brilliant marketing by Nintendo to get users to burn up the battery or leave it plugged into the AC all day. The idea is that you leave it on so your Nintendog will whimper or bark every five minutes and require your attention. No thanks, I’ve got enough email to attend to not to worry about some virtual dog being petted with a stylus. Yeah, yeah, but it’s cute.

For a couple hours it is cute. And then it gets old. Unlike your Nintendog.

A real dog doesn’t even demand your attention every five minutes, much less every 30 minutes. H/she would sit by your feet and every once in awhile want to play or go for a walk. Much more likely he’d be sniffing around for a place to take a mondo crap!

We’re chatting in the IRC this morning about it and here’s a few of my comments:

TD: so i took the dog, I call him Keno, out on a walk and he brings me this disposable camera — no film — WTF good is that?
TD: it’s about as useful as Onstar computer dialing … no background noise it works “ok” but if you have background noise the dog just ignores you.

There are some gimmicky-type uses like blowing into the Nintendo DS microphone blows bubbles at your Nintendog. This game needs a Sims-type realism lift so that your dog can grow older, can die and/or at least take a crap. I’m not into traumatizing young gamers, but let’s teach them a lesson about how to pick up after and really care for a dog besides just feeding him and training him. True pet ownership is more than just pet the dog, teach it tricks, enter into fun competitions, and go in search of disposable cameras and other “treats” that your Nintendog finds.

And speaking of treats, you can’t refuse what the dog brings you? How realistic is that? I suppose I’m supposed to find film at a store for that disposable camera so I can take pictures of the dog? Ok, I suppose that would interest me for about … ten minutes. What would be cool is the ability to upload pictures to the web an interact through the net somehow but wait, that’s right, Nintendo doesn’t think the web is that important. Or maybe they do now that the PSP has an official browser. Lame.

I guess if you are near another Nintendog it will allow some cool back/forth dialogue wirelessly through the DS. We have two copies of the game and two Nintendo DS, so we’ll have to try that out someday. If there is something groundbreaking with that back/forth situation then I’ll write about that. Frankly, I’m disappointed with Nintendogs. I expected more.

Truth be told, I was bored of this game after a few hours of “gameplay.” I see why it’s selling so well to younger audiences and I see Nintendo really working it, but it’s not for me. Or for any gamer who actually wants to escape the Nintendo confines for a realistic dog owner experience.

  3. They chase tails … early on when you take them on a walk your nintendog meets a virtual dog friend and they chase each other in circles. Didn’t see any butt sniffing though lol

  7. Julie is right, the dogs do in fact take craps. Alot. Not in the house, they are good little puppies, but whenever I bring my dog out for a walk, he poops. Everytime. And you have to click on it to clean it up or else other owners you meet get mad. So I suggest you play the game a little more, and play a little more attention to whats going on before you write a review for it like this…

  8. tc - first of all, look at the question mark in the title. Question marks do not equal certainity. I clearly said I didn’t see it and I played the game for several hours before writing this review, as I do most all games. Now I’ll present the same request to you that I did to Julie, if you can take pictures or provide links to any authorativate screenshots displaying this, we’ll put this whole thing in the pooper scooper ;)

Nintendogs is a fun game the dogs acctaully do crap and if u do find a disposible cammra u can sell it in the second hand shop and get money to buy stuff, it’s accctually a fun game if u play it long enough, i have three german shepherds, and if u buy like a pull rope then u can play tug-of-war with them

    All you Idiots who think it’s crap, you are soooo, totally WRONG!!!!!!! Just pay more attention to the actuall GAME, not whether it craps or not. It is acuatlly quite fun to play.
    As I said before, it is a fun game, through and through, so, pay attention and you might learn something!!!!

    and personally nintendogs is great, yeah its not for everyone, but for those who cant have real dogs- this is a great solution, and also- in reply to the blog where it said about it barking every 5 mins for attention- well u dont have to have it on ALL the damn time- thats bloody stupid, howd u play anything else? u can turn it off, and leave it for like 3 days before you need to re feed it etc

Chris - I have a life, this is a blog, and I write pretty fast about things like this (feel free to take a stroll around the other 2,800+ posts sometime), so it wasn’t that big of a time drain for this single entry that took all of 20 minutes to write. I spent much, much more time playing Nintendogs than writing this post.

    What surprises me is that it is some four months later and some people are still annoyed that I asked what I still feel was a pretty relevant question (see title). Sorry if some don’t approve. I like a lot of what Nintendo does with games. I think they are an innovative and creative company and I enjoy buying and playing many of their games.

    I just didn’t care for this one. I’m sure Nintendo is glad many other people do care. Happy gaming to all of you :)

  29. well you know it doesn’t really matter to what anyone here thinks cause the game is still gonna be the same no matter what anyone thinks and yes the game has its faults but if you like dogs then its fine for you and sometimes it does get a little boring when you’ve pretty much done everything and are just getting money and going on walks but its either you like it or you don’t so get over it!!!!!!!!!!!

It might have been created to help future dog owners to get a little tast of what it is like to own a real dog or simply a game to pass the time away. You should think before you speak because you may have offended the creators of this game. You may not like this game but in the few hours of play, you have to admit you had a little bit of fun. I dont know how old you are but mabey this game is not for your age catagory. This game was probley ment for ages 8-15. I bought a nintendo so i could have this game and in the 2 months I have had this game i have been pleased.

But remember, u can sell things ur nintendog givs u at the second hand shop off the go out-go shopping menu, there r no films for disposable cameras-just sell them for about 4 quid, the dog dus take a crap on walks, but it’s like a lil ball that flashes u 2 pick it up and there’s a cheat to get everything in the game n I really want it but it’s nowhere to b found on tinternet. my m8 has got it so I know it deffo exists. any help here guys? plz!!!

  57. I got a DS and a Nintendogs game card for my birthday, when I got it I couldn’t stop playing it. It is so fun, if only everybody had a DS and nintendogs, I could go into “Bark Mode”,meet people and exchange toys. I got a HELICOPTER at wile taking a walk yesterday,it was awsome. I’ve wanted a DS and nintendogs ever since it came out, AND NOW I FINALLY HAVE ONE.

  62. First people need to get off the editors back after all this time. I think the trillion people who were screaming “THEY DO TO CRAP” gave reason enough to believe that they do. Now to the editor - One time was not enough to come to a complete mindset about the game. Nintendogs is like Sims in the matter that some people love it to death and others get anoid just hearing the name of it. I own the nintendogs and personaly I do like it alot. True it could use some improvements: The ability to become a breeder and the ability for the dogs to grow older. But we also have to keep in mind that there are young children who are playing this game too. Nintendo has and always will be family orientated. So if they would show dogs “doing it” or dieing we would kind of be moving into rated “T”. Parents don’t want to have to tell their 7 year old what the two computer generated dogs are doing. Or have to go through comforting tears because a fake dog died. In genderal I would like to say that nintendogs is a hit in alot of house holds, yes it could use improvement, but so does a lot of other game that are out there. So to all - QUIT BEING SO ANAL AND ENJOY THE GAME!!!! -

  80. Ok heres one I know this is quite hard. Its is to get a mutt.

    If you have chiwawa and friends…
    Get a male chiwawa and name it AlfredH then get a female Jerman sheapard and name it NanChar. Keep then in the same room, just the 2 of them for 1 whole hour. Then after 1 hour donate AlfredH to the hotel (I know so sad). Keep the female alone it the room for another hour then take her for a walk over every ? box thing you can. During this you should find a present and a thing should come up saying that you got the “H cube” go home and drop the H cube on the floor. it should smash and another little prenent should come out. NanChar should get it and bring it to you. When it comes up it should say You have got the “Chipard”. 2 little puppys (smaller than ur female) should be on th floor now. NanChar should go up to them and they should all start sleeping. The puppys look like chiwawas that are a little bigger and have the same markings as NanChar.

  100. Read the manual little more carefully next time. They do crap and it’s mentioned in there. There’s no need for screenshots if you just learn to read a bit first.

    However, I must agree that Nintendogs does tend to get boring after a little while. I got it for Xmas last year and managed to play it for an entire month before it sat on the shelf. After a few months of it collecting dust I “rediscovered” it for about another month. I’m currently starting over for the third time now.

  103. if you want much more points easily, leave the brush on your dog (dont touch it) after minute you get 3 points!, the other cheat is go for a walk, go through as much presents as you can and go last to the park. when you get all presents from walk and reach the park, change your dog accesory to anything. When you change it and click back it will say saving… when it sais that quickly turn your nintendo ds off and on again. When you go for another walk you can walk with the same one!, and also you got all the presents you found on your last walk!!!, This cheat is great to increase points, more presents and last but not least more chance of finding the Jack Russel terrier, but to have even more chance, put a knit hat on (it you have one) then Claver clock, it\’s clock.   105. Hi Jacqueline. You can make money by selling the things that you find on walks or entering a disc competition, an obedience trial, or an agility trial. You can practice for disc competitions by walking to the park and practicing with a disc. Don’t throw the disc too far at first when you’ve just started training your dog because then it won’t be able to catch it. Practice makes perfect! And to practice for an obedience trial, you can teach your dog tricks. Each class in the obedience trial has different tricks that you’re suppost to perfrom. You can see them in your books under the care section. Oh, by the way, this competion also makes you the most money. And last but not least, the agility trials. You can practice at the gym. If you don’t know how to train your dog, find the agility trial book under the care section.
    Anyway, hope that helped.
    By the way, Maisie, do you mean that when you first go your game, you got the JRT after 5 minutes? You got the dalmatian too? You’re so lucky. I went on Nintendogs.com and I saw a video of them. They are adorable!

  115. Hi. Sometimes people get bored of Nintendogs, personally I don’t! I love it ^v^ However I don’t think your stupid cus you don’t like it for example people call me stupid for liking Pokemon but some people love it and that’s what makes people mad because some people don’t like that particular thing. Anyway nintendogs can take a poo like a lot of people said and if you stay with your dog long your dog can learn neat tricks like Dance,Handstand, Backflip, Sing and a whole lot of other neat things. I have a dog name Shadow who I love to bits ^v^ shes’s a Labrador and I always wanted a real Labrador but I can’t just now. You can also unlock all dogs when you have enough trainer points plus two exclusive ones Jack Russell and Dalamation. ^v^. Also you can get nice karts and helicopters that you can control which is very cute ^v^. Change your house I hope to get the Seaside I ‘m nearly there I have to get £50,000 and I have about £44,000.
    I suggest play a little longer maybe you’ll get more into it then.

    To Jodi, No you cant make them breed at least I don’t think so I’ve read on a website that a person did loads of cheats (including breed one) and the Nintendogs went mad and had to restart the game >

  131. if you want your dogs to breed, get a girl dog and boy dog(they have to be the same kind of dogs)then LEAVE THEM FOR ONE WEEK for example if you leave them Sunday at 6 oclock came back at 6 oclock the NEXT sunday or it will be too late .   146. I’d like say that nintendogs is mostly for little kids,I don’t know how old you are but anyway a kid would get it if they want a real dog but are not allowed. I know I would NEVER EVER want my dog to get old and die because the dogs on nintendogs are soooo cute! and I would get to attached to it. Secondly they do take poops but not that often, like maybe once or twice a day. And they aren’t that big because who would want to see a “giant-sized mound of steaming poo” as you say.

  153. i think the game is fun and ive had it for like 3 years! i unlocked all of the breeds (including the dalmatian and jack russel) and u dont have to feed and play with the dogs every day! i once left the game alone for months and when u play it again the dogs in ur house will be famished, parched, and have fleas. all you have to do is give them food and water and give them a bath. what does suck though is if you taught your dog how to do good in agility or obedience and then when you leave the dog alone it forgets everything you taught it! plus, the dog does crap…but its kind of nasty for the game players to watch a dog take a giant poo…i mean, nintendo wants to make the game appropriate for all ages so they have to be a bit less graphic. plus, if you want the dog to die so badly, you can always just DONATE the thing! even though it sucks to not get paid for donating it, its still humane. and a lot less depressing than if it did die.

    I’m 12 and from the UK and really like this game. When I first got it on christmas a loooongggg….. time ago I was so happy but got really annoyed because i didn’t understand the instructions after naming your dog. Then my dad helped and I loved it. After a while I didn’t bother then kmonths later I would reset my game and start afresh. But now i’ve had it 4/5 years and have continued from last time. I have 2 adorable labrodors, Lily and Callum. I used to only do agility trials because they were easy - i got 13 ‘1st in championship trophies’ but qwith these dogs i do every competition. Lily can beg then i dragged her paws up and she looks like she’s dancing. it’s so adorable.
    I have this amasing rainbow wig which is 3x the size of my dogs’ heads. I also have one of archies secret records. I so want my dopgs to have puppies and i always remember seeing a page in the manual saying that the only time when they can have more than 3 dogs in the house, is when they have puppies. But i have been through the manual many times and can’t find it. That’s why I would like anyone to say any cheats for this game. If your not saying any cheats because you don’t want to share them please say them because I so want them.
    OK, i kno i’ve wrote a lot but please read this.

    p.p.s. i searched the internet ages ago and found this picture of 2 nintendogs humping which someone had sent in and it had been on these news pages ( i think) people weren’t sure if it was real or not. i will try and find the answer to whether they can breed.

  161. Nintendogs poop when you take them for A walk (You should play the game more often.) And it would just be plain annoying if your Nintendog pooped on the carpet every 5 seconds. Why should Nintendogs get old either? Once puppies get older they may get new skills but after awhile they stop being so fit and cute and sleep more and after so much enjoyment I got out of the game I would never want them to die! Nintendogs is probably the most awesome virtual pet I have seen so far! (Despite the fact it’s unrealistic.)

    1. How do I get owner points?
    2.Will they grow up?
    3. Do they go on longer walks because the more often i walk my dog or the more rest i give him?
    4. How do I train my pup? like to roll,lie down,beg,shake and all the other stuff
    5. Do I have to give my dog petting EVERY SINGLE DAY??? if drives me bananas -_-

  167. When I first got the game I got a dalmatian. I trained her, and entered her in contest and I managed to get 2 more dogs. I did the same with them. 3 weeks later I have 83000$ (in the game obviously) and the dalmatian that I got at the beginning has won 32 consecutive victories in the championship. So if you really interest yourself into nintendogs, you can do ANYTHING! I’m still excited now and then wondering if I’ll find new items because i know I haven’t got them all! I think you should have more appreciation for the trouble the creators went through to make this a world-known DS game!

  168. They DO crap u dipstick, there puppies, they don’t crap mondo piles! The game is made to fit wround a normal person’s life! Unlike Neopets or most virtual games, if you have a HUGE project due and you have no free times, your animals won’t starve or die! And most people don’t keep there games on 24/7 either, if it bothers you soo much, turn it off nimrod! And all ages play this game, would a parent hear the end of it when there 7 year old’s pup died!? NO!!! My little brother has an idiot webkinz, and when his got sick and he couldn’t afford the medicine, he cried and cried and criend untill we all played thoose stupid games to get him the money! AND FINALLY unlike they show when they have theese dogs on TV, most dogs bark all the time for attention, they don’t just stand at your feet, unless you have some Lassie-trained dog!   172. 1) The dogs do poop, you retard. If you take them on a walk, they will stop and sniff the ground, and drums will play. The dog will either poop or pee. If it poops, you must tap it with your stylus so that it will go in a doggy poo bag.

    2) The point of the GAME is that it doesn’t grow up. It doesn’t grow up so that you can take care of it forever without it dying. Which, brings up another point.

    3) Small/young children play this game, and parents do not want to deal with tears because a young child’s electronic dog died! And trust me, they would cry!!

    4) They do not breed, because that is first of all not the point of the game, and second of all, young/small children play it and that is inappropriate.

    5) Really, who asked you?
