Developer friendly Google Talk vs. ‘coming soon’ for developers Skype |
Interesting watching what comes out of competing camps. While Skype is overwhelmed and excited by the 500+ emails they received from developers who want to get busy with “coming soon” development APIs for SkypeWeb/SkypeNet, Google is actually delievering the goods via code.google.com:
There are interfaces in multiple languages, including Python, PHP, Java and C#, and the Jabber Software Foundation maintains a healthy list of libraries on their site. We hope you enjoy our developer-friendly Google Talk.
Anybody hear teeth gnashing in Estonia?
Two entirely different approaches to launching a compelling, attractive developer program. My advice to Skype: get those new beta APIs out ASAP … your future could very well depend on it! And no, that’s not just hyperbole. Once Google Talk starts gaining serious steam and has developers cranking out cool apps for it, grows their member base (which is Skype’s biggest strength as of this writing), people will start turning from Skype in bigger numbers. Yes, Skype has the member base and core features but times can change quickly. If there is any doubt of that, just ask AOL.
