Curry thinks iTunes will start using OPML |
Rob Greenlee from Webtalk on IT Conversations (and Webtalk Radio as well) interviewed Adam Curry for 90 minutes via Skype recently. One of several things discussed that I found interesting was Curry saying he believes Apple is going to embrace OPML in its directory structure.
I have checked out Dave’s OPML editor and used it for a test blog. Haven’t used it as any sort of directory tool or editor really because I haven’t completely bought into the format yet. As a developer/programmer I’m a little bit there, but not as much as a user. One of my hangups is when the OPML node is being hosted by an unreliable third party source, which leaves the directory incomplete. This situation could be dealt with programatically of course by pulling in and caching the remote OPML files, but that seems to cut down on the community sharing aspect. I’m curious about exploring this area in more depth. Works good for lists of rss feeds, though.
Rob tried to drill down and find out if indie podcasters will be moved out of the iTunes directory eventually and Curry gingerly navigated that question saying that Apple can’t manage the flow and doesn’t really want to monitor every feed looking for RIAA violations, but has to because of the liability concerns.
The other thing I didn’t know — and this might be really old news because it’s been awhile since I’ve visited the site — is that ipodder.org has now become indiepodder.org. This, Curry said, is to show support for indie podcasters.

They also discuss BitTorrent and the bandwidth and security concerns, as well as podsafe music, licensing and more. Really, it’s an excellent interview, download and listen, if you haven’t already.
Rob invited me to be a guest co-host for Webtalk Radio (I think it will be my fifth appearance) later today. Looking forward to that, as always, although today will be the first day I’ve appeared that hasn’t been a launch day. We’re breaking the tradition, Rob!
