5am arrives too early |
It’s been a long time since I’ve had to force myself to get up at a specific time every day. I know, I know, most people do this all the time; getting to a job that starts early in the morning. I used to do it all the time too when I worked in the restaurant business some 11+ years ago. I’d be up around 5am and be at work by 6am. And I did that five days a week, sometimes six.
But boy do those days seem a long time ago.
Today marks the start of the second week for our workout with me, my oldest son and the Y. I’m working out alongside him making sure he doesn’t overdo anything and showing support in his quest to tone up and my quest to get back into shape. I think this is where it starts to getting more difficult to making our routine a habit. Our planned routine is to get up at least five days a week at approximately 5am (we’ve been saying “early” but the ultimate goal is 5am every weekday) and workout for 1-2 hours every morning. This way he can make it to school (which starts in a few weeks) at 7am and I can get to the office.
BTW, we created a new category for this blog: Health and Lifestyle which will cover various issues related to fitness, health and the way people live. I’ve written about this topic on/off since it began but never really had a place to put it. Do now.
Did I say that 5am arrives too early? What time do you get up each day for work? When do you go to bed? I’m trying to get to bed by 10-11pm each night. Trying.
Did this post make you go hmm?

I so know the feeling! I’m a 5:30am guy myself… It’s ok though the gym is pretty empty so early in the morning…

I’m up for work every day (m-f) at 2:30am. Leave for work between 3:15-3:30 and it takes me about an hour to get there. Good news is the traffic volumes are real light at that time in the morning. The bad news is, any cars that I do see out on the road most likely have just left the bar
Yikes!!!
What time do I go to bed? I try to make it by 9:00 or 10:00pm most nights but by the time Saturday rolls around, I am a complete zombie.

An hour to get to work at 3:15 in the morning, Janine?!?! How far from your office are you anyway? Don’t you hate that kind of commute? Maybe I’m really spoiled, our office is two blocks away and in walking distance. Even when I used to be in the restaurant business my longest commute ever was 45 minutes. Most of the restaurants I worked at it was 15 minutes or less. I like driving and being in the car, but doubt I could do any longer daily commute than 30-45 minutes for any time because I’d feel like I was missing too much productivity time LOL.
I know other folks though who enjoy an hour commute, so maybe that works for you, yes/no?

No…the hour commute does not work for me
But unfortunately I discovered this the hard way. The commute is approximately 45-48 miles and only about half of it is freeway driving. The other half is driving through sections of towns where some of the speed limits are only 35/mph. Naturally at this time in the morning I slightly speed above the 35/mph but with a little over 20 miles of driving on these streets, my increase in speed hardly makes a difference. And, I have to be extra careful while driving on these streets because the roads are so infested with deer and I’m afraid of hitting one.
I only have myself to blame for this commute. Three years ago the company that I work for opened a second location and I had gone over to help out in the beginning and ended up never going back to the other building. My boss talked me into staying at the new location by offering an increase in pay.
The commute didn’t bother me for the first year or so but, now that it’s three years later, I can honestly say that I’m getting a little tired of it. At some point–and I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately–I’ll either have to move closer to this location or go back to the other location I used to be at.
