Today was the first morning since we signed up for a family health club membership at the YMCA. Total cost $212.50 USD for the first month and it runs $100/month for our family of five thereafter. Seems a bit spendy if we don’t use it, so that’s the goal: use it.

The whole family went last night for a couple hours and this morning from 8:30 - 10am Jowl and I went and rode 4 miles on the bike and jogged/walked 2 miles on the track. It wasn’t easy getting Jowl up and ready but once he got to the facility he was good natured about it and worked hard.

Some of these new exercise machines have some pretty sophistocated computers. One of the bikes we ran kept track of our time, heart rates, calories, distance and more. Unfortunately, they don’t have Wi-Fi at the YMCA facility (some do). I’m thinking about taking the Tablet PC and catching up on my reading while riding the bike.

During our Webmaster Cookbook podcast yesterday Jowl and I talked about NATS 2.0 Nutritional Analysis Tools and System, which helps folks determine how many calories are in the food they are eating. For example, a couple Mickey D cheeseburgers and large french fry is over 1,000 calories! Yowsa.

  1. It may seem a bit expensive when you have to shell out the initial $212.50. But after that it really doesn’t sound so bad when you break the figure down if you were to base it, for example, on a 12 month period for a family of 5. The cost only ends up being about $21.88/month for each person. $21.88 sounds like a nice trade off for the health benefits. The challenge will be sticking with the program. And also not going to Mickey D’s after the workout :)
Gads. I had no idea what the calories were in a McDonald’s meal. I can only imagine what the calories are in a Big Mac & large fry . No wonder this country is so fat. My calorie intake is 1100 to 1200 calories a day. Not a meal. Yikes.
