Wireless gambling approved in Nevada |

Playing slots on a handheld device while at the buffet? Within a year this could very well become a reality in Nevada which has just approved wireless gambling. This story comes via cnews:
[Joe] Asher [managing director of Cantor G & W] would not disclose details about the encryption method, and said a biometric system that reads a user’s fingerprint could also be used if regulators prefer. The wireless devices would be linked to a server that could verify the gambler is the person who checked out one of the devices at a casino. Asher says the devices could be set to stop working in non-authorized areas, and players could establish limits in advance by depositing money in an account.
These handheld devices will still have some restrictions:
the devices will only be used in public areas of casinos with 100 or more slot machines and that offer at least one other gambling game. Devices will not be allowed in hotel rooms or private areas.
This step greases the way toward online gambling which is something I’m sure every casino in Nevada would like to tap into — legally. With the proliferation of indian casinos and online gambling, Nevada and Atlantic City are no longer pretty much the only games in town. They need something like this to attract lost customers.

[…] I’m siding with gamblers that prefer the coin operated slots with reels and coins over the current crop of video slots. The ploink sound of coins hitting the metal catch trays and the reels spinning, slowing and stopping is an important part of the casino ambience that ticketed video slot machines just don’t quite emulate. I don’t however care for reaching into what some smokers use as ash trays to retrieve the coins. Recognizing last year an opportunity to invest early in handheld wireless gaming — which I believe will pave the way for legalized internet gambling — I made an investment in IGT which trended upward in 2006 but has dipped so far in 2007.
