M1400 Tablet PC conflict with Kyocera KPC650 Card

Over the last 24 hours I’ve been in heavy EVDO mode and a number of people in conversations have asked me for more details aboutVerizon’s EVDO broadband wireless. Here’s what I’ve learned so far:

1) To clarify from my first post the service costs $79.99 per month plus tax. I left out the per month part originally but it’s been added now, sorry.
2) The Kyocera KPC650 PC card is their newest PC card and it somehow conflicts with the M1400 Tablet PC. It will not load the drivers, no matter what we’ve tried to do to make it work. We spent hours trying to get Windows to recognize the drivers — no dice. When my trouble ticket with Verizon got elevated the technician decided to call the manufacturer, Kyocera, directly about it and their response was a rather puzzling: “we don’t work with Tablet PCs.” Huh? That’s what the technician relayed to me, so it’s third party information but if this is true — and I have no reason not to believe the technician — that’s crazy. A device designed for portable devices that doesn’t work with Tablet PCs?
3) The possible solution I’m being now recommended is to try out the older 5220 PC card to see if that’s more compatible with the M1400. The Verizon technician said that seemed to work well. I remember seeing a guy using an M1400 Tablet PC with EVDO at the Tablet PC get together at CES, so I know that there is some card that works with the M1400, but apparently not the one pictured above: Kyocera KPC650.
4) There is only one 5220 card in the entire Puget Sound area according to John at Verizon who did some very helpful calling around for me. He said I could also order one online but I’d like to try this out sooner of course, if possible, so am about to make the trip to acquire that one card (if possible).
5) Last night we traveled all around the Puget Sound area and I was able to use the EVDO at speeds up to 1.2mb (download) and 180-200k (upload) in some areas near the Seattle center. The connection only went dead for a short trip off the Bainbridge ferry on the island and then picked up with 2 of 5 bars for most the trip all the way south.
6) I had a brief IM conversation with Chris Pirillo while driving around. Solid connection, very fast response, no issues. Works good on our older Sony VAIO laptop with Windows XP Pro.
7) Discovered that by driving just a few short miles east from our home and also our office on main street we could get the EVDO broadband at 800k down 80k up, so my first report that it wasn’t availabe in our area should have carried the word “yet.”

As I write this I get the feeling they are turning on access at towers in the surrounding areas. It’s really exciting to see this unfold and the only barrier in me being completely satisfied with the experience is that I can’t yet have it working on my Tablet PC. Soon, hopefully.

We’re going on vacation soon and it would be cool to have the Tablet PC internet-enabled. If the proposed card switch doesn’t work there are other ways to skin the cat, but first intend to work through the traditional channels and get it working with the M1400.

A few minutes ago I decided to call Motion computing and ask them if they had heard anything about this and maybe had any other ideas. I wasn’t hopeful, since it’s not their hardware but thought maybe they had heard from other users. This was my very first call ever to Motion Computing, BTW, and they tried to help with the situation. Since I bought my M1400 through Dell I wasn’t sure how that would work but they said Dell was just a reseller so don’t worry and just call them if there are any problems. Anyay, they did have a possible fix for the issue in the knowledge base.

I tried the steps indicated in this to see if that would help recognize the card.

Motion support further told me that they might be able to get in touch with the manufacturer to work through the issue directly as long as the manufacturer would provide a test PC card. That’s pretty neat. I give my first ever support call — after 196 days of owning an M1400 — to Motion an A+++

I have Googled M1400 Kyocera kpc650 conflicts and didn’t find anything. I am going to post a note in the Tablet PC Buzz forum about this after making this post to see if anybody there has any ideas on this one. It’s puzzling.

So before jumping into any major conclusions here I have the following questions:

Are there any other M1400 EVDO users with the new Kyocera KP650 PC card that are having the same problem? If so, were you able to fix? If so, what did you do to resolve this issue?

Well this certainly sucks! Nothing more annoying than trying to get a new PC card to work only to have the drivers sit there an laugh at you….

  2. Hi-

I recently heard (to my chagrin) that TabletPC isn’t a full implementation of XP — that could be the problem.
Some problems have surfaced with Venturi — try turning it off (of course, if you can’t load it to begin with….)
Current version of Venturi is: 3.1.4.
Also, the latest version of VZ Acess Manager can be downloaded here:

    Verizon Wireless PC 5220/AirCard 580 (PC Card) – Version 5.1.0 (1143c)
The AirCard 580 is the same hardware as the PC 5220, but it has a different label, longer warranty and slightly different firmware.

  5. I am trying to locate the drivers for this card for Windows XP. Verizon tells me they are on Kyocera’s website which I have spent a hour so far looking for. I called Kyocera who said they do not have them I must get them from Verizon. So as you can see I am in a wonderful Verizon Wireless Pointing game. As per usual nothing has changed with them. Any help would be much appreciated.

  6. Try this…..I pulled my hair out till I found this and it worked. I was using a version of VZAccess manager that was too new for the Kyocera card. Scroll to the VZAccess Manager for Kyocera KPC650 download.

  9. It does work, make sure there are no com port conflicts and if there is, disable the one thats not the kyocera card and it should work.

  10. I have a Dell Latitude D420 that freezes everytime I try to install this card. Verizon pointed the finger at Dell, Dell doesn’t know and I have yet to call Kyocera. I’m begining to think this card is a POS.

  11. We have also recently purchased Dell 420’s and already have the Verizon Braodband cards. Same thing happens to us. If anyone has heard of a fix, please post.

    Comment by Steffers — November 13, 2006 @ 4:46 pm PST

  12. Dell states that the Verizon cards are conflicting with the D420 chipset on the motherboard & possibly the Richo driver as well. The only fix is to swap motherboards on the D420. Dell says they are working on a fix and should have something by the end of November.
I heard however the low end Verizon card should work on the D420, I believe the verizon card is
the V620. However, Verizon told me those cards are crap and I shouldn’t go with that card…haha

Later, hope this help you all.

  13. I have a Motion LE1600 with a KPC650 air card. I also had major issues getting the card to work but I finally realized that it was a COM port conflict. I had to delete the COM port that the card wanted to use and specify one that was clearly not being used.

  15. I’ve found that if you use the latest version of VZAccess Manager 5.7.7 the card will not be recognized so use the version that has been posted above 5.3.0:
