Being that I’m not using Movable Type, Typepad or Blogger for this blog, MakeYouGoHmm wasn’t welcome to beta test RSS for Adsense, but maybe it wasn’t such a bad thing because some bloggers are beginning to report underwhelming RSS advertising results.

Admittedly, 510 impressions aren’t enough to draw conclusions, but 10,000 impressions should reveal some measurable results. A month ago readers might remember me commenting on how Robin Good wrote that he wouldn’t be using Adsense in RSS feeds? Seemed like BS to me then and it turns out it was, as recently Robin Good “secretly” (his words, not mine) ran a test with Adsense already and had produced 10,000 ad impressions via RSS with mediocre results. Tris Hussey writes:

With roughly 510 impressions not a single click, not one. But I’m not alone in this. Robin Good, same thing but on a grand scale 10,000+ impressions and something like 3 clicks.

Now check out the comment by Scott Rafer of Feedster on Robin Good’s blog entry about the Feedster ads for RSS:

We’ve been seeing noticeably better results and it’s noticeably better than $0.11 per click (though 30% CTR is out of our reach).

This coupled with the fact that I’ve always liked Feedster was enough to get me clicking over to Feedster to see their Option #2: RSS Ads. Argh, another form wait and see deal! I signed up anyway and will see what they have to say. However, my experience with “wait and see” deals hasn’t been promising. What kind of tease is this, Scott?

These early reports on RSS advertising could be a loud and clear message that readers who use RSS do not like these type ads. I can kind of see the reader’s point. Here they have been getting pristine content for months and in some cases years, and then the content space is invaded by ads? Understandably unreceptive audience.

  1. It would be great to be able to serve everyone at once and have provide “wait and see” dilemma. However, we’re working hard to grow this business up right, so we’re trying to take an orderly approach to it. Thanks for sticking with the process.

  2. […] Does this disrupt the RSS reading experience? One of my biggest concerns with using ads in RSS was that the reading experience would be too disrupted. I respect publisher’s wanting to be paid for their content, but I do not like being abused by advertisements trying to read the content; it’s a very delicate balance. I think this might have something to do with why some people trying other RSS ads were experiencing poor clickthru ratios because they overdid the experience. Being a firm believer in ads in moderation, I wanted to see what this experience would be like — as a reader — in several different RSS readers. So I fired up several different RSS readers to check out this feed […]
