Feedburner has made a very user-friendly move to give their users back their feed traffic if they should decide they don’t want to use the service any longer. Basically they have a 30 day window where they attempt to notify all RSS aggregators to internally redirect. I agree with Randy Morin in the comments and Dave too that wish the redirection would be more permanent than 30 days, but the fact that they are going to do this for even 30 days is a very classy move.

This is a good time to point out that we’ve been using Feedburner for subscriptions to the individual categories here at MakeYouGoHmm but not the main feeds. I need to do a better job of making each cateogry feed be more obvious on the relevant category pages. From the home page you can subscribe to the categories you are interested in. Just look for the tiny orange xml buttons next to each category name.

  1. Well, it’s really nice of them to allow time for the transition. Then again, some users, like me, may not use their feed readers frequently… in my case, I haven’t used it in a month or so! Then again, that’s my fault, and reading your post reminded me that I need to stop surfing for a while… =D

  2. […] We’ve used the service Feedburner somewhat sparingly across a few of our blogs. Overall, I’ve been happy with the service. I resisted the idea of using them for the main feeds here simply because I didn’t like the idea of offloading the primary feed to a third party. Yes, it can be done silently in the background with some backend redirection and Feedburner is good about graceful exit plans (see: Feedburner won’t burn you on the way out), but most folks won’t bother. In fact, some folks will delete a feed and create a new one without concern for what happens to the old feed. […]
