eval.google.com mystery unearthed |
Save for the numerous “slashdotted from the start” references this is a promising first blog entry by Henk van Ess via his blog SearchBistro about the mysterious eval.google.com site that doesn’t come up unless you have the proper login and use a network known by Google:
What is it? It’s a lab of humans from all over the world (from China to The Netherlands, from Korea to Brasil) They are paid to check search results of Google every day. Most of the employees, called international agents by Google, were recruited through universities all over the world.
Depending on what time of the day you try to visit to read this, you might receive 503 errors: “The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later. ” The ./ effect in full force! There apparently is a flash movie but I wasn’t able to access with the current traffic blast.
Bottom line is van Ess is reporting that Google has employed these “international agents” for helping to keep spam out of their index. An international quality control team. Makes sense to me and isn’t really a huge shock to me that they have a quality control team. I’m glad they do, in fact. Yahoo, MSN, A9, Jeeves, I hope they all have quality control departments.
Did this post make you go hmm?
