Yahoo Personal Blog Guidelines 1.0 |
With too many stories of employees being fired for blogging, it’s good to see some companies starting to publish official blogging guidelines. Yahoo isn’t the first company to do this (see Yahoo Personal Blog Guidelines 1.0: PDF,) but it’s one of the biggest to do so. Yahoo blogging stalwart, Jeremy Zawodny, lays down some sage blogger/blogging advice:
And realize that once a cat is out of the bag, you can never get the damned thing back in. The blog world is incredibly efficient at spreading rumors, secrets, rants, hyperbole, and your mistakes. You’ll make mistakes. We all do. Just try to be smart about it.
For those looking for case studies of not being smart, try this tale of Mark Jen; too bad it is non-fiction. Jen has bounced back a little bit though as last I heard he was working for Plaxo. Good for him, as he seems like a decent guy who just made some numbskull blogging moves. And no offense to Plaxo, who is a privately held company anyway, but they don’t have stock that opened this morning at $277.27 a share, which is over $100 a share more than what it was when Jen worked there. I hope Mr. Jen still owns GOOG stock, at least.
I digress.
Whatever the size of one’s company blogging should definitely be covered in the employee handbook along with company internet usage. Thanks to Yahoo and other companies who are providing a good, real world template to work with and from.
Did this post make you go hmm?
