Examples of spam comments deleted |
Recently I wrote about comment deletion policies and thought I’d share a couple examples of spam that is routinely deleted from this blog. Since all new commenters are moderated on their very first post, readers never see this stuff. But we sure do.

And this one:

Also, we delete all comments that aren’t in English, unless someone we trust translates it for us. I need to add that to the comments terms, I guess. If we don’t know what you are saying, we can’t approve your comment at this time, sorry. If we had translators on staff then we could do that, but without translators we have to have an English-only policy at this time, sorry. And, BTW, no babelfish is not a good alternative.
Did this post make you go hmm?

Hey TDavid - what about trackbacks, from what appear to be legit blogs, but the linking blog doesn’t include anything about anthing you’ve written on your blog? Is that considered trackback spam?

Hi Toby - good question. I consider most one-way trackbacks to be spam (one-way meaning that they don’t link to the piece anywhere in their blog entry) unless they add significant value to the discussion or if it is somebody I know and we link back and forth to each other regularly (and maybe they just forgot the link, is my assumption).
Personally, I think it’s a bit tacky to trackback to somebody without linking in the blog post. I try not to do that myself. I have the rel=’nofollow’ removed here so SE juice is being sent to those who trackback or comment, so I figure the least those folks can do is make sure to link to the trackbacked piece and share the linklove.
