In-Comp-etence USA over Mac Tiger purchase

customer adventures, finance — by TDavid @ 2:06 pm PST

Before telling this story, let me admit up front that I clearly didn’t investigate this Wordwide Apple Premier launch tonight of Tiger OS X 10.4 very well. Tonight at 6pm PST they are actually launching Tiger, you cannot buy it before then. Don’t listen to what retail store managers, employees, anybody who doesn’t have their hands actually on the boxes in front of you, because us customers are not supposed to be able buy it before then.

At least that’s what I’m being told. Now let me explain in detail:

I’ve been planning to talk about Tiger on my Script School and Webmaster Cookbook Radio show today. Tiger is supposed to 200+ features which would give a lot to talk about. The plan was to document the trip to the store — complete with audio taken from the car trip — over. The problem: I didn’t preorder Tiger so I had no idea if I’d even be able to get a copy of it on launch day.

So I called the closest store that sells Apple products: CompUSA in Tacoma, Washington. I spoke to the manager there, Ian

(this is inaccurate, I would learn on Monday evening May 2, thanks to a reporter from the Tacoma News Tribune, I did not speak to Ian — sorry Ian for wrongly fingering you. Ian wasn’t even working that day. I simply pressed the number to speak to a “manager.” I will write a new entry with more on this conversation with the reporter in a new entry. Try to call the number yourself and get to a manager for the Tacoma store. The automated phone system is a bit convoluted.)

… who informed me that yes, they had Tiger in stock and that they had two boxes — totalling 24 copies of Tiger OS X 10.4. I asked him how early I should get there to have a chance at being able to buy one of those copies.

“As long as you get here by noon, you should be ok.” Ian, CompUSA manager told me.
“What time do you open?” I asked.
“Nine o’clock.”
“Ok, I’ll be there at opening time.”

So I re-arranged my morning schedule so that I could leave and be there at the Tacoma CompUSA store around 9 o’clock. I even blogged about it right before I left this morning. Also, last night I wrote about how I’d be writing more now that I was (hopefully) getting a copy of Tiger over on my Mac blog. I indicated in that post that I knew about the World Premiere.

On my way over to IncompetenceUSA this morning, I called via OnStar hands-free phone back to my Vonage voice mail to talk about my excitement of the experience driving to the store. Later today on the Script School Radio show I’ll be playing this audio. I also tried calling my new Skype voicemail from OnStar. I realized something new while doing this: since there is no numeric keypad I couldn’t press star (*) to record/review the message.

(Sidenote: I called the always-friendly OnStar and they said that they are working on something with this and hopefully there will be a way to “upgrade” service so that you can press numbers for automated phone systems).

The picture above clearly shows the type of morning: hard, miserable rain. At one point in the trip I was two car lengths behind a police officer who apparently didn’t like that I was even that close (I was travelling five miles beneath the speed limit) and he flashed his lights briefly at me. I slowed down to make it three car lengths … and then another motorist cut between us anyway.

With the rain I arrived about fifteen minutes after the store opened. I was delighted to see that they had the exit doors wide open so I could walk in through that way as opposed to walking around the outside of the store in the downpour. That is pretty much the only right thing that happened from this moment forward.

As I walked toward the back of the store I saw the familiar black Panther OS X 10.3 boxes lined up in the distance. I didn’t see anything Tiger-related. Nothing. Nadda. Zippo.

A sinking feeling crept over me. I saw a clerk milling about near the Mac section of the store and I asked him: “Excuse me, what about Tiger?”
“That isn’t available until 6pm.” The clerk said politely.
I clenched my teeth and forced a smile, thinking: So I just drove approximately 20 miles on the advice of the store manager to get here before noon and I should “be ok” and they couldn’t even sell it to me until 6pm?

I moved around for a minute, gathering my thoughts and trying not to lose my cool. It wasn’t the clerk’s fault that their manager had apparently given me bogus information. Toward the back of the store another woman named Nancy asked if she could help me. I explained to Nancy that I’d called and spoken to the store manager yesterday and he told me I could purchase a copy of Tiger before noon.

Nancy went into a backroom and consulted with a higher power while I waited. About a minute or so she came back and said, “Sorry, we can’t sell that before 6pm. It’s a corporate policy. A deal with Apple.”

After grousing a bit about the situation, next I tried to negotiate with Nancy to find out if since I had come all this way I could pay for Tiger then and just pick it up later after the launch time. Tonight at 5:30pm I already had a scheduled committment to be recording a WebTalk Radio show and I wouldn’t be able to be at their store until well after 6pm PST. I was worried if I came back at say 7 or 7:30pm then the 24 copies they had would be gone. So then I’d have wasted two trips worth of gas and time to be DENIED both times.

She said there was nothing they could do. They couldn’t take my credit card info and hold it, then charge the order at 6pm and then let me return later and pick it up. Nothing they could — or would do — to even earmark a copy for me. Yes, I asked, but it didn’t matter how many times I asked or how politely I asked — no deal. Nancy was pleasant about it, as if understanding why I was frustrated. I wasn’t expecting them to break a corporate agreement with Apple, but I was worried that by the time I came back later tonight I’d be too late. If the manager hadn’t told me that I could buy it this morning, I never would have come to the store.

I started walking to the exit and Nancy walked along with me. I kept pleading with her to please try again and see if there was any way they could like layaway one copy of Tiger so that I could be sure to have a copy later this evening after the 6pm time. If she’d have told me: pay us an extra $20 USD I would have glady done that. I was still very much in the negotiation mode.

Nancy stopped, smiled and went back into that office in the back to give it “one more try.” She consulted with someone, or somebody, and came back out shortly with a disappointed look.

“Sorry. Nothing we can do. We aren’t even supposed to show you the box.”

Huh? Not even supposed to show me the box? So is Apple paranoid about people seeing the fricking packaging or what?

It was obvious that I wasn’t going to have any luck with the store so I decided to go up the chain of authority and asked who the district/regional manager was for the Tacoma store and for their contact information. The minute you ask for the bosses number the air of tension in a room increases. They did give me the information, but somewhat reluctanctly. I had to basically insist.

Also, as I’ll show you a little later, I had Nancy actually write down on a piece of paper that they couldn’t sell me a copy and then let me pick it up after 6pm. She signed it. On that same piece of paper is the name of the region #12 manager, Dick Winters.

I was thinking maybe this Mr. Winters could contact the store manager and see that one copy of Tiger was set aside with my name on it? Again, I wasn’t expecting the store to violate their agreement with Apple, but at the same time I felt that because the store manager (not an employee who might not have known better, mind you, a manager) gave a customer bad information they should try to do something to make the situation right. I also was annoyed about the gas and time wasted.

Now let me sound off for a minute about how utterly stupid and anti-customer a 6pm launch time. I understand launch days, they make good marketing sense, but launch times? What the hell is Apple thinking? What’s next? 4:20 launch times, complete with bong sale? When customers want to buy, you sell, Apple, what is your problem? This is horrible marketing in my opinion. You never want to send customers with money in hand packing.

Of course if I had pre-ordered I wouldn’t have anything to bitch about. Well, here’s the problem with pre-ordering: where’s the fun in that? Part of the fun of buying something on launch day is the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat (when everybody else has already bought all the copies). To me, this is like Christmas day, I look forward to launch days.

I don’t look forward to launch hours.

Now this story isn’t over yet. It gets better. Much. I’ll cover that in part 2: contacting the InCompetenceUSA regional office #12 …

  4. This letter is strictly my personal opinion about the write. I have never read something more moronic in my life, someone who complains about his own stupidity and ignorance about the retail market. I am an Apple user and I knew three weeks ago that Tiger X was time released and dated. Yes, time released ignorant child; the past few releases were time and dated for release and I never had a problem getting the product I needed from Apple. Even when I went into the CompUSA Tacoma store the day after release, I was able to purchase one. For customer service at the said store, I only know the name of the store Apple person, and he is a good and honest person. I doubt this ignorant child who wrote this letter can even see past his stupidity about how a store is operated. I think Apple has a release clause in the retail world and someone who goes out of his way to make trouble of himself, by trying to get something before it is to be released is in my opinion low educated and most likely have some serious personal issues he needs to get help for. You are very ignorant from what you have written and I hope there is a way that the CompUSA Company can put you in your place. I can easily read a lot of slander lawsuits and copyright infringements that can be found against the writer. You posted a copyrighted picture of Apple product by the way. I hope there is repercussion that follows from this ignorant rant. What tops off this whole issue is that this ignorant child actually apparently got a hold of someone’s admin and both recorded and harassed this person. “I hope you get nailed for that if anything”. In my opinion, this sounds like this writer is a want to be journalist with a poor IQ. In closing, I say, learn the retail market in how Apple works and get a life. To say the least in closing, I have read all that was written about this lame rant and side against the rant. Grow up ignorant child. I hope I never see this child in life; you look as ignorant as you write. You are in line for the Darwin Award…

  5. I’m not completely sure why I approved your comment, “Shooper” (did you mean “Shopper”?), but I will make an exception in this case because I deserve some admonishment for not realizing that no store could sell Tiger before 6PM Friday.

Honestly, before your comment I was surprised that nobody else has already done so. You are absolutely correct, I should have known better. I also started this piece off by fully admitting that. Maybe you missed that disclaimer at the very beginning?

I should have never taken the word of the retail store. Stupid me. You seem to skip past this point though and try to paint me as someone trying to pull some sort of scam — not true at all. Why did they ever give me misinformation to begin with? Is there no fault for that? I had better things to do then make the drive over there. I trusted them.

    They let me down.

With all that said, please get with the program: this is a blog and isn’t intended to be professional journalism! I’m not looking to professionally publish any of this material, although if it’s drawing such strong emotions as yours, maybe I should rethink this?

Also, now that I’ve been alerted that reporters from the Tacoma News Tribune are reading this, maybe I should write some of my more personal rants on another of our blogs? And yes, I received a call earlier tonight from a reporter about this very story (keep reading).

People write about all sorts of personal things on their blogs. They write about triumphs and tragedies, good stories and bad stories, and open up their humanity. If I can’t write about things I screw up and show my humanity than what’s the point?

Also I’ve programmed the search so that readers can subscribe by keyword so you can literally read this blog anyway you want to read it (or not read it at all, even). This way readers who don’t want to read these kind of entries can skip them if they like.

If you are only interested in Apple coverage then may I suggest reading my Mac blog instead: http://www.tdavids.com/mac/ — you will find there entries from an experienced Windows user exploring the Mac. Maybe as an experienced G5 user you can teach me a thing or two?

Then again, maybe you are too pissed off to take me seriously. I think you got more than a few things wrong here though. I’m not mad at the store. No way. They were very courteous. I think my blame is much more obviously placed in the follow-up here: http://www.makeyougohmm.com/20050503/1804/

I bought my first ever Mac (an eMac) in October of last year and I don’t haunt the Apple site knowing their every move or plan, but you are correct that I should have known better on this special 6PM launch time. For those who know me and my experience on the web I thought would find this story humorous that somebody who does programming for a living, among other work, would make such a stupid mistake. I’m human and just as prone to mistakes as anybody else.

I blogged about the launch on Thursday night and knew about the Apple store special events but I didn’t question the misinformation I was given on Thursday by the Tacoma CompUSA store. I indicated all this in the story. Do you work there or something? Are you the relative of someone who does?

Sounds like you are taking my commentary a little too personally (unless you are Dick Winters or Reggie), but I believe in the First Amendment so go ahead and speak your mind.

Hopefully you’ll feel more comfortable leaving a name and contact email next time, though because I have a harder time taking seriously those who won’t sign their name. I got your IP, though, and if you are experienced, then you know what that means.

Maybe I’m not as ignorant as you think :)

  6. Wow! Just… WOW!

First, I would like to state that I am a Mac user as well – I own three Macs (two of them are capable of running Tiger). I was/am excited about the launch of Tiger, but I refuse to get caught up in the “gotta have it right now!” frenzy of launches. I can wait and I really do not like dealing with all the crazy people that are associated with normal time-dated launches – people like you.

I saw your disclaimer above. Fine. But it appears that you still continue to beat a dead horse over something you admitted up front was your own fault – your own lack of information. What’s worse is that you blame others for this and accuse them of giving you erroneous information when the information you were seeking was readily available on the Internet from not only the Apple website, but several hundred other websites of Apple users and fans. Just typing in “Apple Tiger” in Google reveals over 9,000,000 links – and the first 10 pages are packed with OSX 10.4 reviews and information. Yes, the “Internets” is an amazing thing.

As for the misinformation about the stock levels of Tiger; did you ever consider that some places have shipments that arrive daily and the initial shipment might have actually been 24 pieces? They might have received additional copies from Apple that were not immediately listed in their inventory the day of the launch (I’ve worked in a warehouse before – inventory is not always updated immediately). I understand that you might not have thought of this, so I pose this to you as a possibility.

Now to the real “meat and potatoes” of the issue; from what I am reading in this blog, you seem to enjoy making large issues out of something that, admittedly, was your own fault due to lack of information. Yet, you insist on insulting the employees, the store, and Reggie specifically. I have to say, if I were Reggie, I would have hung up on you as well. What kind of person uses threats and intimidation to get what they want?? Three types of people – someone who is desperate, someone who feels powerless to affect a desired outcome or someone who looks to start trouble in an effort to obscure the true cause/issue. I hardly think you were that desperate for OSX 10.4 since you have admitted that you are a new Mac user. This was shown by the fact that you did not know that ANY external firewire DVD drive that is Mac compatible IS bootable. In fact, CompUSA carries these drives – drives that are also DVD burners that are Mac compatible. So there really was not a need for you to state, “… my weekend was going to be spent trying to run down an external Firewire DVD drive that was bootable….” The drive you were going to spend the weekend seeking was likely in stock at the store and you could have purchased it while you were there to get Tiger.

Really, I am just amazed at the fact that you even posted this or even made an issue out of it in the first place. I bought my two copies of Tiger at CompUSA in Tukwila on Sunday. When I was purchasing them, Jake (the Apple Rep) was there selling a new G5 Tower to a customer and offered to install their purchase of Tiger on it for free while they looked around the store or want out for coffee. This is why I shop at CompUSA for my Apple products – because the people there know what they are talking about and if they do not know, they always refer me to someone who does, like Jake.

Say what you want about CompUSA, but it is obvious from your postings that the fault is entirely your own and no one else’s. No one at CompUSA wronged you – you did that all on your own. Delete my post if you wish, but if you truly believe in the First Amendment and freedom of speech, you should leave it up for all to read as I believe I have some very valid points.

    Comment by Sam Spade — May 3, 2005 @ 12:39 pm PST

  7. Hey Sam Spade - I haven’t insulted “the store.” I’ve complimented the store several times throughout this with their professionalism displayed. My issue is with the misinformation I was given over the phone, the treatment received from Reggie and the fact that nobody from the store or the corporate office would bother to earmark a copy for me despite giving me bogus information. What did they do? They went home for the day.

Sam, sorry but you sound like another CompUSA shill to me.

My request was a simple one, don’t you think? If they had plenty of copies what was the harm in simply setting aside one box with my name on it? If they had done that then there would have been no Reggie and probably no blog entries either, capiche?

Sure, I could have pre-ordered it and not had to deal with the drama, but I like to go out on launch days to talk to other geeks like me. You call us “crazy” and I call us excited :) It’s all perspective.

You weren’t there for the conversation with Reggie and if you think I’m “crazy” after reading my description of the events, then hey, that’s your perspective. I guess you are reading what you want to read here. I’m not going to delete your post because you at least at the stones to use a name (even if it’s fake) and an email address, unlike this Shooper character.

There’s 1,800+ blog entries here and somehow I doubt you’ve digested them all to draw your conclusions about what types of things I write about, but so be it. There’s millions of blogs to choose from to read, so find another or use the function I described above to filter through the content for what you are interested in. This is my blog, though, and I’ll use that First Amendment to write about whatever I choose to, thank you.

And if I’m “beating a dead horse” than please tell me why the Tacoma News Tribune is calling me about this? I didn’t call them.

Obviously, there is at least some interest in a story here.

    Comment by TDavid — May 3, 2005 @ 1:43 pm PST

  8. As for firewire — well, they didn’t say anything to me at the store about having the drive in store. In fact, I was sent over to the tech counter and I specifically asked them. It was the Apple rep who told me it needed to be bootable. I didn’t make this up, this came from the source.

I will say this, the next day I went to one store: the Apple store, and I got a great deal on the Lacie DVD burner. It came with Toast 6 Titanium. I wrote about it on my Mac blog.

    Comment by TDavid — May 3, 2005 @ 1:48 pm PST

  9. “My request was a simple one, don’t you think? If they had plenty of copies what was the harm in simply setting aside one box with my name on it? If they had done that then there would have been no Reggie and probably no blog entries either, capiche?”

They couldn’t set one aside because this would be a breach of the agreement they have with Apple. I doubt that they are willing to sacrifice a multimillion dollar agreement for one person.
    See this site: http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000777041145/
I found this out when waiting for Half-Life 2 too hit store shelves (yes, I own two PC’s as well). I was informed that any store selling a copy before the official date would get fined several thousands of dollars and the copy that you registered would be disabled and you would not be able to play it – ever. You would have to buy a new copy after the release date. This is not something new; many companies do this – Apple is notorious for doing this. If anyone at a “brick-and-mortar-store” set aside a copy or sold a copy prior to the official launch, that store/company would loose the right to sell Apple products – EVER. Using your limited influence to change this simple fact to one that is in your favor is either a lack of understanding or a lack of caring on your part. Expecting Reggie to bend the rules for you is simply ridiculous. What I believe you should have done was pursued speaking with the staff and managers at the Tacoma store. Your beef about the misinformation was with someone in that store – not with Reggie or Dick Winters. While they would not have been able to set one aside for you before the launch time, I’m sure someone could have set one aside for you after the clock hit 6pm. There is always a way to get what you want – even if it means a minor compromise on the part of both parties.

Now, as for the rest, I will state this as succinctly as I can. It just seems to me that you are trying to make a huge issue out of a minor inconvenience – an inconvenience that could have been avoided by doing a quick two minute search of Apple’s website. You would have also found that a DVD drive was required as it ships in DVD format only. This is what I mean by beating a dead horse – there is no story here, yet you continue to propagate one. Also, when you did not get exactly what you wanted, you threatened Reggie by telling him you were recording the conversation. This simply was just bad form. Why risk prosecution by even making this claim – true or false? I think you could have handled this issue in a better way and still gotten close to everything you were asking without putting you or CompUSA in a bad light.

Basically, you simply handled this entire issue wrong – and now you’ve posted so the whole world can see it. Bad form, just, bad form. :(

  10. (Shoo) Used to frighten away animals (per) By means of… My bad, forgot the underscore. It’s a nickname I have always used. And for personal information, I do not trust you or know you.

How I found this article was through search and I am amazed on how little you actually know about the computers and the market. Bootable drives, release dates and times, and the Apple world is a good tight community that does not need someone as ignorant as you are. You are the problem many face when it comes to promoting the small user Apple community in the big IBM compatible PC world.

It is just sad how ignorant people are when they try to write on the internet and try to make themselves credible. This is one reason upper level schools disregard the credibility of online content outside of official journals and literature. Once again point proven on ignorance on the internet.

“Blog” is new to me as this week, I do not tend to read peoples rants and rages because of the fact shown here in this article. Because someone who does not have their facts strait and make a fool out of themselves.

For the whole fame you seem to be getting out of this, what a sad person to actually seek this in this way. Perhaps you need to find some friends or a hobby to actually be proud of.

For the names mentioned, “Reggie, Ian, and Dick Winters”, I’d have to side with them about your ignorance and immaturity in the situation. You really need to find a better outlet for your own acts of misjudgments in decisions that you make. I feel you are a very sad and disillusioned individual and perhaps you should seek help. (IE: Depressed or another Psychological disorder that may need some professional help)

I do not know you and I hope I never do; I only know what you wrote in ignorance and pain. So try to be more knowledgeable in the Apple community before you make a fool of yourself and try to drag others into your psychosis.

  12. Sam - You didn’t read what I wrote very carefully. Reggie offered to contact the store and have them set aside a copy for me. The problem is that Reggie never took down my phone number and called me back. I waited for a couple hours.

I agree with you that this could have been handled very easily without the need for me ever calling Reggie or the corporate office. If you don’t think that I tried to get them to work with me on something reasonable while I was in the store then you are out of your mind. Nancy went back into the office twice to try and make something work. I think Nancy did a great job and I salute her. Read my update on the situation where I said she should get a raise. I’m not bashing the store or its employees, just questioning the treatment by the upper management.

Now here’s a newsflash for you to think about: I contacted the Business section editor at the Tacoma News Tribune today (Jack) to verify the credentials of this person who represented herself as Kim, the reporter, last night. He did some checking and told me that he didn’t know who contacted me last night. Jack would have been the manager that Kim told me she was sending this story to. He’s still looking into this matter. There is one Kim that works there in the editorial department but she didn’t contact me last night.

Now you tell me what’s going on here? Seems like the dead horse still has some life in it, Sam. Maybe it’s time to call Sherlock and Watson.

(C’mon you guys, get a sense of humor here)

  13. Last note to say, ignorant is just a kind work other than the ones I should or wish to say. I will not lower my intelligence just to tell a fool how foolish she or he is. Hope your life turns better than what is see through your words and pain. Try to learn how the retail market works and gain more education in ethics and conduct in dealing with others. Perhaps you need a serious life look because of your age and rage. Bye Forever hopefully.

  15. Hey tdavid or whatever your name is. This is actually the first time that I remember responding to a blog. This time I had to do so however, not so much because your little whiney non-issue interests me, but rather I want to see how someone like you ticks. The first thing that strikes me with guys like you is: how do you get the time to whine about things which essentially are nothing? Seriously man, do you have a job? Who has time to write multipage whining letters about something so insignificant? Gotta wonder how you will handle a real problem in life! Who are you to go slander people’s names about on the internet, people with whom you have little to no contact on a regular basis, and likewise have no idea what they deal with on a daily basis. And just for your information, I happen to know that this particular store, actually just won an award for their Apple department from Apple, not to mention helping customers day in and day out with technical issues. But back to you. You know, basically it was your incompetence by which you missed the banners on the websites saying that the product release occured at 6pm, as had the last several OS releases. Rather than admitting you screwed up, you decided to flair about, kicking up your heels, and whining to anyone who would listen. Barring getting any takers, here you come to an internet blog, hoping to vent your little tantrum! I’m just curious, are that little of a man, that such a small thing receives such a position of importance in you existence? I have to wonder. Please explain to me, how having to wait really hurt you. Am I just missing something here? Anyway, make sure you count all of the crunchberrys in your Captain Crunch cereal next time, before you leave the grocery store…lest their employees endure one of your scathing, and yes, oh so literate blurbs. OOOOOHHHHHHH!!!! PS, thanks for sharing the picture. Your clownlike smile is very fitting! Seek help silly little man! - zshan
