Blood painting: art or eww? |

Sure, we’ve all had nasty cuts, but I’ve never thought of using my own blood as a paintbrush. This is the web, though, and you can bet somebody else has — and did.
Think I’ll take eww. You?
Did this post make you go hmm?

I think there’s some extra ewwness about this - I have a bad feeling “january’s moonblood” (look closely at the pic) doesn’t come from a cut.

Hi Tk - I was being facetious with the “cuts” comment. My wife thought I was serious too … perhaps I should have thrown a smiley in there

Well, I think its an art. But most people who do blood painting do it with animal blood, not their own. Personally, I think its great, but I can understand those skittish of blood, or those who wouldn’t be thought morbid (like my self)not liking it.

I paint with blood. Yeah I think it’s pretty gross but very powerful if used right. I’ve got a pic of my first blood painting which was just a test to see how blood feels on my brush and how it ages on paper. I’ve got newer ones but haven’t posted them yet. They’re much more thought through as far as composition and stuff. Blood by itself doesn’t work very well as you can see above and on my site, there isn’t much depth. The trick is using it with other media like graphite.
The first ones I’ve done were done from cuts on my forearm with a sterilized xacto knife. The cuts are about an inch and a half to two inches each. I did the cut and then loaded my brush from my arm. The first of these blood paintings took four cuts, but once i figured out some tricks to make myself bleed more I was able to do others with just one good cut.
I’ll be working with a phlebotomist from now on instead of gathering scars from cuts. Also portions of the sales generated from my current and future blood work will be donated to the Red Cross. I do this because the blood I put on paper could have been donated to the red cross.
To see the basic first painting i did go to http://rlbroughman.com and navigate to the paintings section.

Im starting to do blood paintings myself and I think that the blood makes the painting better (only if its their own) cause that shows that they put themselfs actually in their painting, they are giving a part of themselfs for their art.

I suffer from depression and as part of my “visual diary” when I’m really ill (depressed) I’ve pricked my fingers and drawn with my blood. I find it a great inner and almost spiritual release to get rid of my inner (mind) pain. Depression is a very terrible illness and one which has no outer signs like a broken arm can be wrapped in plaster. No one can see the pain of depression, so my blood drawings express my inner pain. Even my shrink said it was a good safe way of self expression, seeing as I only pricked my finger and didn’t actually slash myself.

Yeah that’s art, some say ewww but blood painting is like an artists signature within the painting itself

I do art and painting with blood. My own, and I’m not female, so…It helps you connect with your art in a way that very few can seriously understand. Definitely say Art…

Anybody ever do a car with blood? With paint, it takes less than a gallon.

I paint with my own blood. For me it’s the ultimate form of expression. The first bloodpainting I ever did was for my girlfriend. I always had trouble expressing my feelings so I took a knife, cut open my hand and made her a painting. In short I’m willing to bleed for her..literally.
I came to the conclusion that I ahve never worked with such fine material as blood, but afterwards I feel always a little dizzy, becasue sometimes I use quite a lot of blood.
It’s the most personal form of art you can make. Artists always put a piece of themselves (heart, soul, thoughts) into a piece. What better way is tere then to use your own blood to do so?
